How to improve streaming quality for the Hulu PS5 App

When watching a video in the official Hulu application of the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition gaming system, you may notice that it is playing at a low resolution.

To see how you can improve the streaming quality for the Hulu PS5 App, you can take a look at this troubleshooting article from Seeking Tech.

1. For the first step, we recommend that you have the highest resolution set for your PS5.

In order to do so, you need to go to the Settings menu of the console and then select Video and Screen > Video Output.

From the Video Output menu, you should then make sure that you set Resolution to the highest possible.

2. Next, you should check to see if your internet connection is fast enough. Otherwise, you will be limited to watching Hulu videos at a lower quality.

In order to test your current internet connection speed on the PlayStation 5, you need to head back to the Settings menu and then select Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.

For the uninformed, you will need at least 1.5 Mbps, when it comes to download speed, to stream Hulu videos. For 720p videos, the requirement doubles to a minimum 3 Mbps.

The Hulu PS5 App current supports a maximum streaming resolution of 1080p, which requires 6 Mbps. So, for the best video quality, you need to make sure your internet can keep a consistent minimum of 6 Mbps when it comes to downloads.

It is important to note that Hulu currently does not support 4K streaming on the PS5. If the application gets updated to add 4K support in the future, then you will need at least 16 Mbps of download bandwidth.

3. If you are downloading, streaming and/or playing online games on other devices at the same time, then it may cause Hulu videos to stream at a worse resolution.

So, if you want to improve the resolution, make sure you stop or pause any other activities that may put a strain on your bandwidth.

4. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, then you should make sure that is strong and stable.

To improve on a wireless internet connection, you can try moving the Wi-Fi access point and PS5 closer together. You should also make sure that there are any physical objects or any other wireless devices that may hinder the internet speed.

5. For the best and most stable internet, we recommend connecting your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition online by using a wired Ethernet connection.

6. As we stated above, Hulu can only stream videos at a maximum of 1080p on the PS5. With that said, the application could get updated at some point to add 4K support.

To check to see if a new update is available, you need to press the options button with the Hulu icon highlighted on the home screen. You can then select the Check for Update option.

How to disable autoplay in the Hulu PS5 App

By default, the official Hulu application on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will automatically play the next video once the current one has finished streaming. If you find the autoplay feature annoying and would like to disable it, then you can take a look at this article from Seeking Tech to see how can you potentially do so.

How to disable autoplay from the Hulu PS5 App menus

If you are currently browsing through the menus of the Hulu App on the PS5, then you can try taking the following steps in order to turn off autoplay:

  • You should find a circle icon with the first two letters of your Hulu profile name located on the top right side of the screen. If you don’t see it, then you can press the circle button on the DualSense or DualShock 4 in order to back out to the previous screens until you find it.
  • Next, you need to select Settings from the list of options.
  • Inside of the Settings menu, you should see the Autoplay option. You can press the X button, use the left and right directional pad buttons or push the left analog stick to the left or right in order to toggle this feature off.

How to disable autoplay in a currently playing Hulu video

In order to disable autoplay when you are currently watching a Hulu video, you need to do the following:

  • Press the X button to pause the current video and bring up an overlay menu.
  • In the overlay menu, you then need to select Settings.
  • From the Settings menu of the current video, you will find the Autoplay feature with the following description: “When you finish a video, another one plays automatically.” Here, you need to select this feature by pressing the X button in order to turn it off.
  • After making sure that Autoplay is disabled, press the circle button to back out.
  • You can then un-pause the video by pressing the X button in order to continue watching it.
  • By disabling auto-playing videos, the Hulu PS5 App will send you back into the menus a few seconds after the current video has finished streaming.

How to fix audio delay when watching Hulu on PS5

You may notice that there is a bit of audio delay when watching Hulu videos on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition system. To see how you can get the sound output to be in sync, you can check out this article from Seeking Tech.

1. For the first step, we recommend that you try playing a different video.

It is important to note that some videos that are dubbed in another language aside from the original one may not have voices that match the lip movements.

2. If you are getting an audio delay across multiple videos, then we suggest taking a look at the sound output device.

Wireless speakers, earphones and headsets tend to have more latency when compared to wired connections. Connecting wired earphones or headphones to the DualSense or DualShock 4 controller may also add a bit to the audio lag. If you have no other options aside from using a wireless listening device, then you can try moving it closer to your PlayStation 5 console.

When it comes to wired speakers, earphones and headsets, make sure that the connecting cable isn’t too long as it may also add to the audio delay when streaming Hulu videos.

We recommend using the TV speakers if you want to reduce as much of the lag as possible.

To change to a different audio source on your PS5, you need to head over to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device.

4. If you are connecting a listening device to your PS5 via a HDMI cable, then make sure you aren’t using a splitter or pass-through along the way.

5. Restarting the Hulu App and/or PlayStation 5 console may also fix the delayed sound output.

6. Of course, we recommend that you keep both the video streaming application, as well as the system software of your gaming system, updated to the latest versions.

7. In the settings of your television screen or monitor, you should check to see if there is an option where you can adjust the audio output speed of the built-in speakers if you are using them.

You should also disable any audio and video settings that require A.I. processing as these may add to the latency.

8. If possible, you can try connecting your PS5 to a different screen to see if dosing so will get the sound synchronized.

How to fix Hulu PS5 zoom in issues

When watching a video using the official Hulu App on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition system, you can notice that the edges are cut off or the image is zoomed in.

To see how you can get the picture to display normally again, you can take a look at this troubleshooting article from Seeking Tech.

1. To start off, we recommend looking at the menus of your television set or monitor to see if there is any setting where you can adjust the size of the display area.

2. You can also try adjusting the display area directly from your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console by taking the following steps:

  • To start off, you need to be in the home screen menu. To get there, you can simply long press the PS logo button on the controller.
  • From the home screen, you then need to head into Settings by selecting the gear icon that appears on the top right side.
  • Inside of the Settings menu, scroll down and then select Screen and Video.
  • On the left side of the Screen and Video, select the Screen option.
  • On the right side, you should then select Adjust Display Area.
  • After getting to the Adjust Display Area use the directional pad or analog stick to adjust the screen size to ensure that it isn’t zoomed in.

3. Moreover, you can try unplugging and then re-plugging the HDMI cable connecting your PlayStation 5 to the screen.

4. You can try restarting the Hulu App as well by doing the following:

  • Long press the PS button to bring up the home menu.
  • In the home menu, highlight the Hulu icon in the Media section.
  • You then need to press the Options button to bring up a small window menu.
  • From there, you need to select the Close App option.
  • After the Hulu App has closed, open it again and then try watching a video to see if the display area remains zoomed in.

5. You can also try restarting your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console.

6. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you have the latest updates for the Hulu App and PlayStation 5 firmware installed.

7. You may want to consider doing a fresh install of the video streaming application by deleting it from the console storage. Afterwards, you can re-download it again.

8. Clearing the cache of the Hulu PS5 App may also help with fixing the zoomed in picture. To find out how to do so, you can check out this tutorial.

How to clear Hulu PS5 App cache

When using the official Hulu application on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, you may run into several problems. Some of these issues may be related to the temporary files and data of the app being corrupted.

In most of these cases, clearing the cache should be able to help get the Hulu PS5 App to run normally again.

To find out how you can delete the temporary files and data, you can follow this article from Seeking Tech.

10. The following message should appear:

  • “This saved data will be deleted.”

From there, you need to select the OK option to confirm the deletion.

11. If you have a game or media app suspended while trying to clear the Hulu PS5 App cache, then you may see the following message:

  • “All games and apps in use will be closed. Do you want to continue?”

Here, you should select the Yes option unless you need to save your progress in a game. If you do need to save your progress, then you need to go back to the game, save your data and go through the previous steps again.

How to pin a media app to the PS5 home screen

If you have a lot of media apps installed on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console, then you may find it annoying that some of them may disappear from the home screen. To see how you can pin specific applications, you can take a look at this tutorial from Seeking Tech.

Before we start, it is important to note that the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition has a dynamic home screen menu. As a result, the most recent media app that you opened will appear on the left. The home screen will only show the 11 most recently opened media applications as the rest of the installed apps can only be accessed from the App Library menu.

1. To start off, make sure you have the latest firmware of your console installed as the ability to pin was added through an update.

2. Next, you need to head over to the home screen of your PS5, which you can do by pressing the PS button on your controller and then selecting the house icon that you can find in the menu located at the bottom.

3. In the home screen, you need to switch over to the Media section, which can be done by pressing the R1 button of the controller.

4. In the Media section, you should find a list of apps that you have installed on the internal solid state drives of your PlayStation 5.

These applications may include Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Apple Music, Crunchyroll, DAZN, Disney Plus, ESPN, HBO Max, Hulu, MLB, NBA, Netfilx, NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL, Peacock, Showtime, Spotify, Twitch, YouTube, YouTube TV and more.

5. Hover over the icon of the media app that you want to pin to the Media section of the home screen.

If the application you want to pin does not appear in the Media section, then you need to select the App Library option located all the way to the right. You then need to open the app that you want to be pinned and then go back to the Media section of the home screen. If done correctly, the app should now appear there.

6. With the media app highlighted, press the Options button on the controller.

7. A small pop-up menu should appear. From there, make sure you enable the Keep in Home setting.

The media app should now be pinned to the Media section of the home screen.

What to do if the YouTube PS5 App isn’t displaying HDR

The YouTube App on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console should be able to display HDR on supported videos. If there is no HDR, then you can check out this troubleshooting article from Seeking Tech to see how you can enable this feature.

1. For the first step, we recommend looking into the Settings menu of your television set or monitor to see if you have HDR enabled.

2. You should also make sure that you have HDR turned on for your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console.

In order to do so, go to the home screen and then select Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.

From the Video Output menu, you should then make sure that you have the HDR setting to On When Supported.

If you have the YouTube App currently suspended while you enabled HDR, then the changes may not be applied in real time. Instead, you may have to close the video streaming application and then re-open it again to see videos being shown in HDR format.

3. If you haven’t done so already, we also recommend that you update both the YouTube App as well as the firmware of your PlayStation 5.

4. It is important to note that, even if a YouTube video advertises that it displays in HDR, it doesn’t necessary mean that it actually capable of displaying the format. There are two ways you can tell that a video is currently being played in HDR format.

For the first method, you can do the following:

  • When the YouTube video is actively playing, press the X button on the DualSense to bring up an overlay menu.
  • You can then press the X button again to pause the video.
  • With the video paused, move up one time to highlight the name of the video.
  • Afterwards, mover to the right a few times and then select Settings.
  • From the Settings menu, select Quality.
  • In the Quality for Current Video menu, you should see the letters “HDR” attached to the end of the video resolutions if you are currently watching a YouTube video in high dynamic range.

Another way to tell is by doing the following:

  • When watching a YouTube video, press the X button twice to open the overlay menu and then pause the video.
  • Next, go up one time and then navigate several times to the right so that you can select Settings.
  • From the Settings menu, make sure you enable the Stats for Nerds setting.
  • A box should then appear on the left side of the screen. Here, you need to look at the Color section.
  • If you see bt2020 in the Color section, then it indicates that you are currently watching a video in HDR format. If you see bt709 instead, then it means that the video is playing in SDR.
