How to fix Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controller double input issues

When using your Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controller, you may notice that the console may register your inputs twice.

You can check out this troubleshooting guide at Seeking Tech to see how you can possibly resolve this double input issue.

1. First off, you can try power cycling your Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controller, which you can do by taking the following steps:

  • If your controller is still turned on, you need to press and hold the Xbox button until it turns off. This shut down process should take around 5 to 10 seconds. (Note: The Xbox button has the Xbox logo and should be lit up when the gamepad is powered on).
  • Wait for a few seconds.
  • After waiting, press and hold the same Xbox button again until it turns on.

2. You can also try to power cycle your Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X console by doing the following:

  • If your game console is turned on, press and hold the power button (which has the Xbox logo and should be lit up when the console is powered on) until it turns off. This shut down process should take around 10 seconds.
  • After shutting down the console, press the same power button again to turn it back on.

3. Another possible solution to the double input issues is to update the firmware on your controller, which you can do by taking the following steps:

  • Turn on your Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X console.
  • Open the Guide menu by pressing the Xbox button on your controller.
  • Press the RB button on your controller several times to scroll over to the Profile & system.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Devices & connections on the left column.
  • On the right side of the same screen, select Accessories.
  • Select the “…” option underneath the image of your Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controller.

  • Go back to the aforementioned Settings menu.
  • Select System from the left column.
  • On the right side of the same screen, select Updates.
  • The top option in the System – Updates menu will show whether or not a new firmware for your console is available for download.

5. We also recommend using the wired connection for your problematic controller. In order to do so, you will need a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable (if you don’t have one then you can purchase the Anker USB Type-C to USB Type-A on Amazon with this link). (#CommissionsEarned).

Use the USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable to connect your Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controller to the console to use the wired connection.

6. If the double inputs go away when you are using a wired connection, then your issues may be related to the wireless Bluetooth connection.

To get a better Bluetooth connection, move the controller closer to your console. You should also make sure that there is nothing blocking the direct line of sight between the gamepad and game system.

Furthermore, you should also make sure that your controller and console aren’t close by any other wireless devices as the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless signals may impact the Bluetooth connection between the gamepad and your console.

7. One last potential fix you can take is to factory reset your console, which you can do by taking the following steps:

  • Turn on your Xbox Series S or X console.
  • Press the Xbox button to open the Guide menu.
  • Scroll over to Profile & system.
  • In the Profile & system tab of the Guide menu, select Settings.
  • In the Settings menu, select System from the left column.
  • On the right side of the same screen, select Console info.
  • In the System – Console info menu, select Reset console.
