Recommended Sony X95L settings for PS5, Xbox Series X and S

If you bought Sony’s 2023 flagship TV, the X95L, then you can check out this optimization guide to see how you can properly set up this screen to get the most out of playing PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S games.

Supported PS5 Features

With the X95L, you can play PlayStation 5 games at up to 120 frames per second at 1080p or 4K resolutions. If you decide to use 1440p, however, then the maximum fps will be limited to 60 fps.

Also supported are Auto Low Latency Mode, HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate.

Supported Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Features

When it comes to the Series X and Series S, the X95L can display at 120 Hz at 1080p and 4K. For 1440p, the refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz. While this Sony TV can display Dolby Vision content, the refresh rate will also be limited to 60 Hz.

The other compatible features include Auto Low Latency Mode, HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate.

How to optimize the Sony X95L for gaming

To properly set up your X95L for playing videogames on the new consoles, we suggest that you take the following steps:

1. To start off, make sure you correctly connected your PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S to the Sony TV.

The X95L features four HDMI ports. HDMI Port #3 and HDMI Port #4 are where you need to connect your PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. When doing so, make sure you use the HDMI 2.1 cable that came with your gaming system.

For the Xbox Series S, you can either use the HDMI 2.0 cable that came with the lesser powered console or get your own HDMI 2.1 cable to connect to the third or fourth HDMI port.

2. Next, open the Settings menu of the X95L and then navigate over to the HDMI Signal Format screen. From there, select the HDMI port that is connected to your console.

Next, we recommend that you select Enhanced Format (VRR). You should see the following details:

Select this option only if your game console supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Picture mode is fixed in [Game] and some picture settings are restricted.

If you want to play a game or watch a video in Dolby Vision on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, then you need to select Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision) instead. Since the majority of games don’t use this HDR format, we recommend using Enhanced Format (VRR) as the default and then switch over to Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision) when necessary.

3. Next, head over to the Picture section in the X95L’s Settings menu. Here, double check to see if Picture Mode is set to Game and Auto Picture Mode is set to On.

By enabling game mode, you should automatically activate Variable Refresh Rate as well as reduce the input delay.

4. Next, boot up your console if you haven’t done so already and then visit its Settings menu.

On the PS5, you need to do the following:

  • Navigate to Screen and Video > Video Output.
  • Set Resolution to 2160p, VRR to Automatic, 120 Hz Output to Automatic, ALLM to Automatic, 4K transfer Rate to Automatic, HDR to On When Supported, Deep Color Output to Automatic and RGB Range to Automatic.
  • From the same menu, select Adjust HDR. This will take you to several screens with directions that will help you calibrate the HDR brightness output of the PS5 to the X95L.

For the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, you can take the following steps:

  • Go to General > TV & display options > Video modes.
  • Make sure you select Allow auto low-latency mode, Allow 4K and Allow HDR10.
  • If you want to watch Dolby Vision movies and/or play Dolby Vision games, you need to select Allow Dolby Vision and Allow Dolby Vision for Gaming.
  • Return to the General > TV & display options and make sure that Resolution is set to 4K UHD. The refresh rate should also be set to 120 Hz unless you are using Dolby Vision.
  • From the same screen, select “Calibrate HDR for gaming.” Afterwards, follow the steps shown on screen to sync up the brightness output of your Xbox to the Sony X95L.

You should now be done with setting up this Mini LED for your PS5, Series X and/or Series S console.

Recommended X77L settings for PS5, Xbox Series X and S

If you purchased the Sony X77L model, which has a Costco variant that is called X77CL, then you can check out this guide from Seeking Tech to see how you can properly set up your LED to get the most out of playing videogames on your PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S.

Compatible PS5 Features

The X77L is extremely limited when it comes to supported PS5 features. The entry level television is capable of displaying games at 60 Hz with HDR10 and Auto Low Latency Mode.

It is not capable of 120 Hz refresh rate or Variable Refresh Rate.

Compatible Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Features

The X77L also does the bare minimum when it comes to displaying games from the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S console. The screen supports 60 frames per second, HDR10 and ALLM.

The TV can’t output at 120 Hz, doesn’t use VRR and won’t be able to display content in Dolby Vision format.

How to optimize the X77L/X77CL for gaming

In order to properly set up the Sony X77L for gaming, we suggest that you do the following:

1. When connecting your console, make sure you use HDMI Port #3 as it is the only one that is capable of Auto Low Latency Mode.

You should also make sure that you use the HDMI 2.1 cable that came included with your PS5 or Xbox Series X. If you have an Xbox Series S, then you can use the HDMI 2.0 cable that came included with the console.

2. For the next step, press the wench button on your television remote and then go to Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs > HDMI signal format.

From there, select HDMI 3 eARC/ARC and then select Enhanced format (ALLM). You should find the following description:

Displays images from 4K supported devices with priority on image quality. Supports Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) when connecting to game consoles.

3. Turn on your console if you haven’t done so already. Using the TV remote, open the Settings menu of the screen and then go to Display & Sound > Picture mode. Make sure that the picture mode is set to Game in order to reduce the input lag.

4. You then need to pick up your game controller and navigate over to the Settings menu of your console.

For the PlayStation 5, navigate over to Screen and Video > Video Output. Afterwards, make sure that do the following:

  • Set Resolution to 2160p
  • Set ALLM to Automatic
  • Set 4K Transfer Rate to Automatic
  • Set HDR to On When Supported
  • Set Deep Color Output to Automatic
  • Set RGB Range to Automatic
20220913101408

You should then select the Adjust HDR option. This will open a new menu with instructions telling you how to calibrate the brightness output for your X77L.

If you have the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, open the Settings app and then select General > TV & display options > Video modes. You should then check to see if the following options are selected:

  • Allow auto low-latency mode
  • Allow 4K
  • Allow HDR10

Afterwards, head back to the General > TV & display options and then make sure that the Resolution is set to 4K UHD.

Finally, select the “Calibrate HDR for gaming” option to open up a new menu where you should follow the directions to help sync up the HDR brightness output with Sony’s LED screen.

The Sony X77L should now be properly set up to display PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S games to the best of its capabilities.

Recommended X90L settings for PS5, Xbox Series X and S

If you got your hands on the Sony X90L or X90CL, then you can take a look a this Seeking Tech guide to see how you can set up this television set to optimize it for playing PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S videogames.

Compatible PS5 Features

With the X90L, the refresh rate is 120 Hz at both 1080p and 4K resolutions on the PlayStation 5. At 1440p, the maximum frame rate drops to 60 fps. Therefore, you want to avoid the middle ground display resolution.

This Sony Bravia television set also supports Auto Low Latency Mode, Variable Refresh Rate (from 48 Hz to 60 Hz or 120 Hz) and HDR10.

Compatible Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Features

For the two Xbox Series consoles, the refresh rate is also 120 Hz at 1080p and 4K while being limited to 60 Hz at 1440p. The TV support ALLM, VRR (from 40 Hz to 60 Hz or 120 Hz) and HDR10 as well for Xbox games as well.

While Dolby Vision is supported, it limits the refresh rate to 60 Hz at all resolutions.

How to optimize the X90L or X90CL for gaming

In order to get the most with your Sony X90L when it comes to gaming, you can take the following steps:

1. Connect your console to your Sony Bravia.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X both come with HDMI 2.1 cables, which you should use to connect to either HDMI Port #3 or HDMI Port #4 of the X90L.

Since the Xbox Series S only comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable, you can use it to connect to any of the four HDMI ports on the Sony TV. You can also get a HDKI 2.1 cable and then connect the Series S to either the third or fourth HDMI port.

2. Next, use your TV remote to open the TV’s settings menu and then navigate over to the HDMI Signal Format menu. Select the HDMI port that is connected to your game console and then select Enhanced Format (VRR).

If you want to play or watch Dolby Vision content on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, then you can select Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision) instead. Since not a lot of games take advantage of this HDR format, we recommend using Enhanced Format (VRR) as the default and then switching over to Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision) on a game-by-game or video-by-video basis.

3. Next, head over to the Picture section in the Settings menu of your X90L. Here, you need to make sure that the Picture Mode is set to Game, which reduces the input lag and enables Variable Refresh Rate.

This should also turn on the Game Bar, which is a quick settings menu where you can manually switch on or off Variable Refresh Rate, Black Equalizer (which may help you see better in darker games) and Crosshair (which adds a crosshair to the middle of the screen). There is also a Motion Blur Reduction option here but it is disabled when VRR is turned on.

In the same section, make sure you have Auto Picture Mode enabled as this will turn on Auto Low Latency Mode.

4. You should be done with the settings on the X90L side. However, there is still more work to do on the console side.

On the PS5, navigate over to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and then make sure you have the following settings set up correctly:

  • Resolution: 2160p
  • VRR: Automatic
  • 120 Hz: Automatic
  • ALLM: Automatic
  • HDR: On When Supported
  • 4K Transfer Rate: Automatic
  • Deep Color Output: Automatic
  • RGB Range: Automatic

On the same screen, select Adjust HDR and then go through the on-screen steps to calibrate the HDR brightness output of your console for the X90L.

For the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, go to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and then make sure you select the following boxes:

  • Allow Auto-Low Latency Mode
  • Allow Variable Refresh Rate
  • Allow 4K
  • Allow HDR10

For Dolby Vision, you need to check Allow Dolby Vision and Allow Dolby Vision for Gaming as well.

Next, return to Settings > General > TV & display options and then make sure that Resolution is set to 4K UHD and Refresh Rate is set to 120 Hz.

You should then select Calibrate HDR for Gaming and go through the on-screen steps to tune the HDR brightness output of the Xbox Series console to match the capabilities of your Sony X90L.

You should now be fully optimized to get the most out of your PS5, Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S.

You can find the pattern for all five screen sizes below:

  • 55” X90L: 300 mm x 300 mm
  • 65” X90L: 300 mm x 300 mm
  • 75” X90L: 300 mm x 300 mm

  • 98” X90L: 600 mm x 400 mm

What wall mounts are compatible with the Sony X90L and Sony X90CL?

When choosing a compatible wall mount for your X90L or X90CL, you should make sure that its weight capacity limit is more than the load of your television.

The 55-inch model weighs just 37.3 pounds and should be light enough for a vast majority of mounting brackets. Your selection will be more limited if you have the 65-inch (at 53.4 pounds), 75-inch (at 78 pounds), 85-inch (at 98.1 pounds) or 98-inch (at 148.1 pounds) screen size.

You also need to pay attention to the VESA Mounting Pattern. The 55-inch, 65-inch and 75-inch versions use the same 300 mm x 300 mm pattern. The 85-inch iteration features 400 mm x 400 mm while the 98-incher utilizes 600 mm x 400 mm.

Recommended Sony A80L settings for PS5, Xbox Series X and S games

The Sony A80L (or A80CL) is the most affordable 2023 OLED television model. If you purchased this TV, then you can check out this tutorial to see what recommended settings you should use in order to make the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and/or Xbox Series S videogames look the best on this screen.

Supported PS5 Features

With the Sony A80L, you can play PS5 games at 120 Hz refresh rate in 1080p and 4K. The 1440p resolution is limited to 60 Hz, however.

This OLED is also capable of displaying in HDR10 with Variable Refresh Rate (from 48 Hz to 60 Hz or 120 Hz) and Auto Low Latency Mode when you are playing on Sony’s latest console.

Supported Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Features

The A80L can also play Series X and Series S games at up to 120 Hz in 1080p and 4K. Unfortunately, the 1440p resolution is also limited to 60 Hz on Xbox as well.

In terms of HDR, this set can display games in HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision. The latter will drop the refresh rate to 60 Hz, however, no matter the resolution.

The A80L also supports ALLM and VRR (from 40 Hz to 60 Hz or 120 Hz).

How to optimize the A80L for your console

To best optimize the Sony A80L OLED for your PS5, Series X and/or Series S, we recommend taking the following steps:

1. Connect your console to the HDMI port of your television set if you haven’t done so already.

If you have a PS5 and/or Series X, then you should use the HDMI 2.1 cable that came with the console to connect to either HDMI Port #3 or HDMI Port #4 of the A80L.

The Xbox Series S only comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable; so, you can use it to connect to any of the four ports of your OLED. On the other hand, you can get your own HDMI 2.1 cable and then connect the console to the third or fourth port.

2. With the console connected, turn on your A80L and then open its Settings menu.

From there, navigate over to the HDMI Signal Format section from the External Inputs menu. Afterwards, select the HDMI port that is connected to your console.

On the PS5, you need to select Enhanced Format (VRR).

On the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, you can select either Enhanced Format (VRR) or Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision). We recommend selecting Enhanced Format (VRR) as the default as not a lot of Xbox games support Dolby Vision. If you need to play or watch Dolby Vision content, then you can return to the HDMI Signal Format screen to switch over.

3. From the A80L menu, head over to the Picture sub-menu and then make sure that Picture Mode is set to Game and Auto Picture Mode is set to On.

4. While your Sony OLED should be ready for your console, you may still need to adjust some settings on the console side.

In the Settings menu of your PS5, head over to Screen and Video > Video Output and then match the following settings:

  • Resolution: 2160p
  • VRR: Automatic
  • 120 Hz: Automatic
  • ALLM: Automatic
  • 4K Transfer Rate: Automatic
  • HDR: On When Supported
  • Deep Color Output: Automatic
  • RGB Range: Automatic

You should then select Adjust HDR from the same Video Output menu and then follow the steps that appear in the following screens to calibrate the HDR brightness to match the capabilities of the A80L.

In the Settings App of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, go to General > TV & display options > Video modes and then make sure that the following boxes are set:

  • Allow Auto-Low Latency Mode
  • Allow Variable Refresh Rate
  • Allow 4K
  • Allow HDR10

If you are planning on using Dolby Vision, then make sure you previously enabled Enhanced Format (Dolby Vision) on your A80L settings menu. Once you do, go to the Video modes menu of your Xbox and then check the Allow Dolby Vision and Allow Dolby Vision for Gaming boxes.

Once all that is done, return to the General > TV & display options and make sure that Resolution is set to 4K UHD. You should then select Calibrate HDR for gaming. Over the next three screens, follow the instructions to match the HDR brightness of your Xbox to the A80L.
