You are required to be a member of PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium in order to play online multiplayer for a vast majority of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. The only exceptions to this rule are free-to-play such as Apex Legends, Call of Duty Warzone, Destiny 2, Fall Guys, Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Multiversus and Rocket League.
To see how you can check to see if a specific game requires PS Plus for online play, you can take a look at this tutorial from Seeking Tech.
1. To start off, make sure you turn on your PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console if you haven’t done so already.
2. Next, you need to head over to the product page of the game.
If the game is already installed and on the home page of your PS5, then you can move the cursor to the game’s icon. From there, go down and then select the three dots icon. Finally, select View Product in the pop-up menu.
If the game is not on the home page, then you can go to the Game Library menu. Select the game from there and then select the three dots icon. In the small window menu, you should then select the View Product option.
Alternatively, you can simply search for the game on the PlayStation Store of the PS5. Searching the online shop is also the only way to view a game’s product page on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro console.
3. Once you get to the product page on your PlayStation 5, look for a small box located to the right.
You can also select the same small box to open the Compatibly Notices menu.
If you see the “PS Plus required for online play” line, then it means that you need to subscription in order to play this specific game online.
On the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro, you should see the following yellow-colored text on the game’s product page if it requires you to be a PS Plus member:
“Paid PlayStation Plus subscription required for online multiplayer.”
Even if you aren’t subscribed to any of the PlayStation Plus tiers, you can still be able to play online if someone else is willing to share their benefits with you. To see how you can share PS Plus benefits across multiple PSN accounts, you can follow the steps laid out in this step-by-step tutorial.
If you have multiple PlayStation Network accounts on the same PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 console, then you are able to share some of the PlayStation Plus benefits. To find out how can use PS+ across different accounts, you can follow the steps laid out in this guide from Seeking Tech.
What PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared on multiple accounts?
You will be able to share the online multiplayer benefit for paid games across two or more PlayStation Network accounts. As a result, you should be able to play these titles online on an account that don’t have PlayStation Plus as long as you have another account that is subscribed to the service on the same gaming system.
The other accounts can also be used to play games that were purchased using a PlayStation Plus discount as well as titles that were redeemed from Monthly Games Catalog, The PlayStation Plus Collection, Game Catalog and/or Classics Catalog.
Non-Plus users can also use the Game Help feature as well.
What PlayStation Plus benefits can’t be shared on multiple accounts?
When it comes to PS Plus benefits that can’t be shared, you won’t be able to directly take advantage of discounts or redeem games from the service on non-Plus accounts. You also won’t be able to directly take advantage of timed game trials or PlayStation Plus discounts unless you are logged into the PSN account that is subscribed to the PlayStation Plus service.
How to share PS Plus for two or more accounts on the same console
In order to share PlayStation Plus benefits across multiple accounts on the same gaming system, you need to make sure that the PSN account that is subscribed to the service set the current console as the primary one.
On the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console, you need to head over to the Settings menu and then select Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. You then need to select the Enable button from the Console Sharing and Offline Play menu if the console isn’t already activated.
On the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro console, you need to open the Settings menu and then select Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. From the Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 menu, you then need to select the Activate option if your console hasn’t already been activated as the Primary PS4.
Once you are done setting your console to primary, log out of the PlayStation Network account that is currently subscribed to the PlayStation Plus. You can then log into a non-Plus account on the same console.
If done correctly, you should now be able to use the non-Plus account to play online matches as well as games that were bought and/or redeemed from PlayStation Plus.
When checking out the games from the PlayStation Plus service, you may notice that there are many categories as you will be able to find titles from Monthly Games, PlayStation Plus Collection, Game Catalog and Classics Catalog.
To see what the differences are between these catalogs, you can take a look at this comparison guide at Seeking Tech.

Subscription Tiers
When it comes to subscription tiers, both the Monthly Games and PlayStation Plus Collection lists are available on all four current PlayStation Plus tiers. Keep in mind that the PS Plus Collection catalog is only for those who have a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console as you won’t be able to add these to your library from your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro system.
For the Game Catalog, you will need to subscribe to the PS Plus Extra, Deluxe or Premium tier of this service.
If you want access to the Classics Catalog, then you need to be an active member of PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium.
Refresh Date
Monthly Games are refreshed at a monthly basis as it usually occurs on the first Tuesday of the month.
The PlayStation Plus Collection does not get refreshed as it has remained mostly the same since the launch of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition system. The only change is the removal of the PS4 version of Persona 5.
The Game Catalog and Classics Catalog do get monthly refreshes that usually occur on the second or third Tuesday of the month.
Online DRM Requirement
The Monthly Games and PlayStation Plus Collection do not have any online DRM requirements as you will be able to play these titles offline.
For the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, you will need to log into the PlayStation Network account that you use to redeemed these titles once every seven days to be able to play these games offline.
When you will lose access?
As long as you added the titles to your library, you won’t lose any access to the titles you redeemed from the Monthly Games and PS Plus Collection catalog if you remained an active member to any of the PlayStation Plus tier.
For the Game Catalog, you must stay subscribed to either PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe or Premium. If the game ends up leaving this catalog, however, then you won’t be able to play it even if you remain a member.
With the Classics Catalog, you need to remain a member or PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium. With that said, once a game has been removed from this category, then you won’t be able to play it again even if you have the right subscription.
If you are a member of PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium, then you are able to add games from Monthly Games Catalog and PlayStation Plus Collection to your library. You should then be able to download and play these titles on your PS4 or PS5 console as long as you remain subscribed to the service.
When trying to add a game from the Monthly Games Catalog and PlayStation Plus Collection to your library, you may see the following:
“Something went wrong. Try again later.”
To see how you can fix this error message, you can take a look at this troubleshooting guide at Seeking Tech.
1. For the first step, you can try adding the same game to your library again.
Based on our experience, adding a PlayStation Plus title may not always work on the first attempt but will work normally during subsequent tries.
2. If you are getting the “something went wrong” multiple times, then you can try restarting your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. By doing so, you will log out and then log back into your PlayStation Network account.
3. You can also try restoring the licenses on your PSN account.
In order to do so on the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, you need to go to Settings menu of the console and then select Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses > Restore.
On the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro, you need to head over to the Settings menu and then select Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
4. If restoring the licenses does not work, then you can try clearing the cache of your console.
To do so, you can try taking the following steps:
First, you need to completely turn off the PS4 or PS5.
Once the lights have gone off, unplug the power cord of the system from the power outlet.
Next, you need to wait for at least 2 minutes.
After waiting, plug the power cord of the system back into the power outlet.
Turn on your game console and then sign into your PlayStation Network account.
Try to add the PlayStation Plus game to your library again.
5. We also recommend checking the server status of the PlayStation Network, which you can do by visiting this official website.
If there appears to be a problem, then we recommend that you wait for Sony to fix the servers before you try adding the PS Plus title to your library.
6. If the “something went wrong” message keeps popping up, then we recommend that you contact PlayStation for additional help.
With PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium, you are able to download many games. With that said, you do have to be mindful with the amount of space you have on the console storage and other storage options. Therefore, you should pay attention to the file sizes of the PS Plus titles you are downloading.
To see how you can the file size of a game on the PlayStation Plus service before you download it, you can take a look at this tutorial from Seeking Tech.
1. To start off, make sure you turn on your PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console if you haven’t done so already.
2. Next, you need to make sure that you are in the home screen menu, which is where you can select which game to open.
To get there on a PS4 or PS4 Pro, you need to press the PS button.
On the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, you need to press and hold the PS button to go home.
3. Open the PlayStation Plus App on the home screen.
4. Inside the PlayStation Plus App, select a game that you want to view the file size information for.
5. Once you are in the product page of the game, you should be able to find the file size in the box located on the right side.
6. It is important to note that some games on the PlayStation Plus service offers both PS4 and PS5 versions to download. In this case, the file size information you find on the game’s product page is actually the total of the two versions if both are downloaded on to the storage.
If you are only interested in only downloading one version, then you should be able to find the file size details by selecting the Download option from the game’s product page. In the Download screen, you should then be able to file sizes for both the PS5 and PS4 versions.
Here, you can select to download the PS5 version PS4 version or both.
Keep in mind that this step only applies to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition consoles as you won’t be able to play PS5 games on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro systems.
If you are a member of the PlayStation Plus Premium service, then you can choose to download or stream a game from its catalog. So, what are the differences between these two options? You can find out in this guide from Seeking Tech.
Quick Summary
The main advantages of downloading PlayStation plus Premium games are that you will end up getting a better image quality, input lag and potentially smoother frame rates. You also don’t have to wait for your device to connect to cloud servers.
For streaming, you will be able to play games on other devices. This can be especially convenient if you want to do some gaming without having access to your console.
Streaming a PS Plus Premium game also won’t take up space on your console storage. Not to mention that PS3 games are currently limited to this option currently.

For streaming on the PS4, you are able to play PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 games.
Supported Games on PS5 Console
As for downloads on the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console, you can play games that are native to the PS5 as well as backwards compatible PS4 titles.
When it comes to streaming on the PS5, you can play PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 games. PlayStation 5 titles aren’t currently supported when it comes to cloud gaming.
Supported Games on Other Devices
On other devices, you are able to stream PS3 and PS4 games.
On the other hand, the download option is limited to the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition console.
Resolution
If you decide to stream a game instead of downloading it, then you will be limited to only 1080p resolution at the maximum.
By downloading, you should be able to get a higher resolution in some cases if you have a PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console. The PS4 console is limited to a maximum resolution output of 1080p.
It is important to note that, even if the resolution remains the same, the image quality should look sharper for downloads.
Frame Rate
For streaming, the frame rate tops out at 60 frames per second, which the same maximum fps for downloads on the PS4 and PS4 Pro console.
For the PS5 and PS5 Digital Editon systems, you are able to play games natively at up to 120 frames per second.
Input Lag
Streaming a game will also add input lag when compared downloading and then playing it directly on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.

For downloads, you need to wait for the game to be ready to play until you can actually open it.

Sony expanded the PlayStation Plus subscription service in 2022. The most expensive iteration currently available is Premium. So, is this tier worth the extra costs? You can find out in this review article at Seeking Tech.
What comes with PS Plus Premium?
By being a member of PlayStation Plus Premium, you will have access to the following:
Online Multiplayer – While online multiplayer is completely free for games that are free-to-play, you need to subscribe to any of the PS Plus tiers (including Premium) in order to pay multiplayer modes for other titles.
Cloud Save Back Ups – Unlike PS4 games, you won’t be able to back up the save files of PS5 titles by using an USB storage drive. Instead, you need to subscribe to any of the PlayStation Plus plans in order to back up these saved data to cloud storage.
Game Help – By using this PS Plus feature, you are able to view video clips that will guide you through a particular section.
Share Play – With this exclusive feature, you will be able to play offline multiplayer games online with friends, provided that they are also subscribed to PS Plus. You can also have others take control of your game.
Monthly Games Catalog – Every month, Sony will provide a list containing a handful PS4 and PS5 games that you have full access to playing as long as you stay subscribed to the service.
PlayStation Plus Collection – This is a PS5-exclsuive collection of PlayStation 4 games that you can add to your library. Similar to monthly games, you must remain a member of any of the PlayStation Plus plans in order to play these titles.
Game Catalog – The Game Catalog contain hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games that you can instantly download and play on your console as long as you remain a member of the Extra, Deluxe or Premium tiers.
Classics Catalog – This collection includes retro games that have been remastered or emulated on the PS4 and/or PS5. You must maintain a membership to either the Deluxe or Premium tier in order to keep playing these titles.
Game Trials – This feature allows you to play select games from the very beginning. You should then be able to carry your progress over if you decide to purchase the full game.
Cloud Streaming – Exclusive to the PlayStation Plus Premium is cloud streaming, a feature that will let you play PS3 and PS4 games on your console as well as other devices like PC, tablet and smartphones.
Members Only DLC Packs – If you are a member to any of the PS Plus plans, then you will get access exclusive downloadable content for specific games.
Members Only Discounts – By being a subscriber to any tier, you may also get members-only discounts on digital content sold on the PlayStation Store.
What we like about PlayStation Plus Premium
What we loved most about using the PlayStation Plus Premium is that you will have access to hundreds of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games through the Monthly Games Catalog, PlayStation Plus Collection and Game Catalog. If don’t mind not owning games, then you should be able to save a lot of money by subbing to this tier instead of buying each title individually.
While we don’t really use Cloud Streaming, Game Trails, Game Help or Share Play, you may find these features helpful from time to time. Cloud Streaming, if you have the right setup, is especially great if you want to play a game when you don’t have access to your console.
The members only DLC packs and discounts may become beneficial for you at some point as well.
Although we don’t like putting online multiplayer and PS5 save file backups behind a paywall, you will get these benefits too if you decide to become a Premium member.
What we hate about PlayStation Plus Premium
The only problem we have with the PlayStation Plus Premium is the Classics Catalog.
Currently, there is not much being offered that justifies the extra costs. Not to mention that PS3 games are limited to streaming, which results in lower image quality and higher input lag when compared to playing the same titles on the original hardware.
Should you get PlayStation Plus Premium?
We recommend getting PlayStation Plus Premium if you enjoy playing classic games. With that said, the current lineup for the Classics Catalog is underwhelming, especially when you consider the abundance of quality games came out for the PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3. Hopefully, this catalog will improve over time as Sony gets better at adding new classics to the service.
With that said, Premium is the only tier that also offers Game Trials and Cloud Streaming. If you are interested in either, or both, of these features, then this tier may be worth it even with the lackluster retro games lineup.
Otherwise, you may want to get PlayStation Plus Extra instead as you will get all of the same benefits aside from the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and Cloud Streaming.
PlayStation Plus Premium or PlayStation Plus Essential?
When compared to PlayStation Plus Essential, the Premium Plus comes with the following additions: Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, Game Trials and Cloud Streaming.
For us, the biggest selling point for the more expensive Premium tier is Game Catalog, which grants you access to hundreds of more games aside from those you get from the Monthly Games Catalog and PS Plus Collection.
Therefore, it may be worth upgrading from Essential to Premium.
PlayStation Plus Premium or PlayStation Plus Extra?
As we stated above, the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and Cloud Streaming benefits are exclusive to Premium.
With PlayStation Plus Extra, however, you still get the Monthly Games Catalog and PS Plus Collection to go along with the Game Catalog. If you don’t mind missing out on retro games as well as the other Premium-only features, then the Extra tier is an excellent alternative.
PlayStation Plus Premium or PlayStation Plus Deluxe?
PlayStation Plus Deluxe comes with everything from the Premium tier with the exception of Cloud Streaming. Depending on your country, you will only get one of these two tiers.
If you don’t want to jump through some hoops, we recommend that you stick with the highest tier from your region.
In 2022, Sony expanded the PlayStation Plus service into four different tiers as you are able to pick between Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium. While the Essential plan remains the same price as the original, the other three versions are more expensive.
To see how you can get a good deal on these subscriptions, you can take a look at this guide from Seeking Tech.
Direct Deals
If you are looking for direct deals for PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium, then the only way to do so is to wait for a sales promotion from the PlayStation Store. This is because you are no longer able to purchase a subscription from a third-party seller or retailer.
In general, Sony will discount the PlayStation Plus plans during its Days of Play sale, which usually occurs during May or June. These subscriptions should also be on sale in November and December, during the Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Holiday and End of Year sales promotions.
If you want the best discounts for the PS Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium subscriptions, then you need to wait for these sales from the PlayStation Stores.
To keep on updates as to when these discounts are available, we recommend that you occasionally check the official PlayStation blog during the aforementioned months.
Indirect Deals
If you are looking for an indirect way to get a discount for PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium, then the only way to do so is by getting discounted PlayStation Store Gift Cards and PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds.
Both of these cards, which can be bought as digital voucher codes as well as physical forms, will add funds to the digital wallets of your PlayStation Network account. The added funds can then be used to purchase a PS Plus Essential, Extra, Deluxe or Premium plan.
Therefore, if you can get PlayStation Store Gift Cards or PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds at lower than MSRP, then you should be able to purchase a subscription at an indirectly lowered price point.
With that said, these cards rarely go on sale. Even if you find one discounted, it is usually not as much as the direct discounts for the PS Plus tiers you find during the aforementioned PlayStation Store sales. Therefore, you are better off waiting for the direct deals instead.
In select regions, you are able to subscribe to the new Deluxe tier of PlayStation Plus. So, is this subscription worth it or are you better off with a different plan? You can find out in this review post at Seeking Tech.
What’s included with PS Plus Deluxe?
By being an active member of the PlayStation Plus Deluxe tier, you will be able to get the following benefits:
Online Multiplayer for Paid Games – To be able to play online multiplayer modes on paid games, you will need to subscribe to Deluxe or any of the other tiers of PS Plus. You don’t need a subscription to play free-to-play multiplayer titles.
Back Up Save Files to Cloud – The only way to back up your save files is through the cloud storage. In order to access it, you need to be a member to any of the available Plus tiers.
Game Help – This is a subscription feature that is only exclusive to the PlayStation 5. It provide video hints on supported games.
Share Play – With this feature, you are able to play any local multiplayer games with another friend over the internet as long as they are also subscribed to any of the PlayStation Plus subs. The friend can also take over your controls in single-player games.
Monthly Games Catalog – With Deluxe, you will have a list of games that you can play. This catalog is refresh monthly and usually contains a handful of PS4 and PS5 titles.
PlayStation Plus Collection – This is a PS5 exclusive catalog that contains a list of 19 popular PS4 games that are backwards compatible.
Games Catalog – The Games Catalog will give you full access to hundreds of games, including some of the biggest titles, for PS4 and PS5.
Classics Catalog – This list focuses on select emulated and remastered games that originally came out before the PlayStation 4 generation.
Timed Game Trials – With this feature, you are able to play select games from the very beginning for a limited amount of time. You should then be able to take your progress to the full game.
Exclusive DLC Packs – The PlayStation Plus membership will grant you access to DLC packs for select games.
Exclusive Discounts – By being a member of Deluxe or the other Plus tiers, you can also get exclusive discounts for digital content found on the PlayStation Store.
What we like about PlayStation Plus Deluxe
What we loved about the PlayStation Plus is that, by being a member, you will get instant access to hundreds of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games due to the Monthly Games Catalog, PlayStation Plus Collection, Games Catalog and Classics Catalog.
These lists include acclaimed titles from a variety of genres. Therefore, chances are very high that you find something of interest that makes the value of the subscription more than worth it in the end.
While we don’t really take advantage of the timed game trials, game help, share play, exclusive DLC or exclusive discounts, these may cater to your interests as well.
What we don’t like about PlayStation Plus Deluxe
The only issue we have with this subscription is that puts online multiplayer for paid games, as well as the cloud save back up feature, behind a pay wall. We would rather have these features free for us and other players as the other benefits of this service is more than good enough to justify the costs.
Should you get PlayStation Plus Deluxe?
If you like to play a lot of games but don’t have the budget to buy them, then PlayStation Plus Deluxe provides a lot of value as you will get access to hundreds of games to play on your PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition consoles.
By being a member, you will also be able to take advantage of timed game trials, game help, share play, exclusive DLC and exclusive discounts. Not to mention that you will also unlock online multiplayer for paid games along with cloud save backups.
PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Essential?
We recommend picking up the Deluxe tier over the Essential tier as the former comes Games Catalog and Classics Catalog. Without these catalogs, which contains hundreds of additional titles, you will be limited to a handful of monthly games.
PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Extra?
Depending on how interested you are when it comes to playing emulated or classic games from older generations, then you may also want to pick up the Deluxe tier over the Extra tier. PS Plus Deluxe also offers timed game trials.
With that said, we find that the current lineups for the Classics Catalog and timed trials to be scarce and underwhelming. Therefore, you may want to stick with PlayStation Plus Extra and then upgrade to the Deluxe tier if you Classics Catalog and/or timed trials lists get better over time.
PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium?
Depending on your region, you will either get PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium. The Premium tier offers the additional ability to stream PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 games on your console or other devices.
While there are ways that you can get Premium over Deluxe, it may too much of a hassle, especially when you consider that the streaming quality of PlayStation Plus may not work perfectly in your region.
Thus, we recommend that you stick with the Deluxe tier unless Sony decides to officially bring cloud streaming to your region.
If you have a PlayStation Store Gift Card or PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds, then you may be wondering how you can check its balance. To find out how to properly do so, you can take a look at this tutorial from Seeking Tech.
1. If you haven’t redeemed the PlayStation Store Gift Card or PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds yet, then you should be able to find the balance printed directly on the physical card.
You can also look at the receipt to see if the amount is printed there.
2. If you bought a digital code, then you can try checking the order confirmation or receipt email to check the card’s balance.
3. Of course, you can also try contacting the seller or retailer where you bought your PlayStation Store Gift Card or PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds from to see if they have any information about the balance of the card you bought.
4. If you got a digital code as a gift, then you can try asking the gift giver more information about your present.
5. Of course, you will also be able to see the gift card balance when you redeem it. In order to redeem your gift card on the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition system, for example, then you need to do the following:
Turn on your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console and then go to the PlayStation Store.
On the front page of the PS Store, select the icon that has the three dots.
In the small window, you then need to select Redeem Code.
Enter the code from your PlayStation Store Gift Card or PlayStation Plus Wallet Funds in the Redeem Codes screen.
Before you confirm your redemption, you should be able to see the gift card balance.
6. If you already redeemed the code, then you can find the balance of the card by looking at your transaction history.
To view this page, you can select the three dots icon on the front page of PlayStation Store App of the PS5. You should then select Transaction History.
7. If you want to check the remaining balance of your gift card, then you can head back to the PlayStation Store App of your PlayStation 5. From the front page, you should then select the three dots icon.
You should be able find the Wallet Balance account located directly under your PlayStation Network user name in the small window.
