How to disable automatic video captures for challenges on PS5

The latest PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition firmware update added the ability to automatically capture gameplay videos of when you managed to achieve a personal best score.

While this may be a neat feature for some, it does take up space on the internal solid state drive. If you want to use the limited space of the SSD for something else, such as storing games, then we recommend disabling automatic video recordings for challenges.

If you are interested in doing so, then you can take the following steps from this Seeking Tech guide:

1. First off, you need to get to the Home Screen menu. This is where you can go to the PlayStation Store, pick which game to play and perform other tasks.

If you are playing a game or using an app on the PlayStation 5 at the moment, you can get to the Home Screen by pressing and holding the PS button on your DualSense.

2. Once you get to the Home Screen, head into Settings.

You can find Settings on the top right corner of the screen with the gear icon, which is in between the search and your profile picture.

3. After getting to the Settings menu, scroll down and then select the Captures and Broadcasts option.

4. After getting into the Captures and Broadcasts menu, select the Auto-Captures option on the left side.

5. On the right side of the same Captures and Broadcasts menu, select Challenges.

6. Now that you are in the Challenges menu, you will see the Auto-Capture Challenge Videos setting.

By default, this setting is enabled as the switch to the right of the wording should be white.

To disable this feature, you need to select the Auto-Capture Challenge Videos Setting to turn the switch to the right of the wording to black.

How to enable automatic video captures for challenges on PS5

If you want to enable automatic video captures for challenges after disabling this feature on your PS5 system, you need to do the following:

PS5 Console Storage vs. M.2 SSD Storage vs. USB Extended Storage

With the PlayStation 5, as well as the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, you can use up to three different storage types. So, what are the differences between the Console Storage, M.2 SSD Storage and USB Extended Storage?

You can find out in this comparison guide from Seeking Tech.

What is the Console Storage on PS5?

The Console Storage refers to the built-in solid state drive of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

What is the M.2 SSD Storage on PS5?

The M.2 SSD Storage refers to the solid state drive that is currently installed on the M.2 slot of the PlayStation 5 system.

What is the USB Extended Storage on PS5?

The USB Extended Storage refers to the external hard disk drive or external solid state drive that is connected to the USB Type-A port or USB Type-C port of the PlayStation 5 system.

Requirements

When it comes to requirements, the Console Storage is built right into the PS5. Thus, it doesn’t have any requirements.

The M.2 SSD Storage has the most complicated requirements as the PlayStation 5 only supports the PCIe Gen4 x4 interface with a maximum sequential reading speed of at least 5500 MB per second as well as a socket type of Socket 3 (Key M). Furthermore, a single-sided or double-sided heatsink is also recommended.

The overall size of the M.2 should be no more than 110 mm (or 4.33 in) in length and 25 mm (or 0.984 in) in width. Moreover, the SSD should be not taller than 11.25 mm (or 0.442 in) with 2.45 mm (0.096 in) of clearance below the SSD as well as 8 mm (0.314 in) clearance above the SSD.

For the USB Extended Storage, you need either a USB Type-A connector or USB Type-C connector with the SuperSpeed USB (5 Gbps) or later.

Capacity

The Console Storage of the PlayStation 5 has a capacity of 825 GB. However, a good chunk of the free space is reserved for the system files. Therefore, you have a very limited amount of space available.

With the M.2 SSD Storage, the capacity ranges from a required minimum of 250 GB to a maximum of 4 TB.

The USB Extended Storage offers the biggest capacities with a maximum of 8 TB. It also has a minimum capacity requirement of 250 GB.

Installation

The Console Storage doesn’t require any installation as the SSD is already soldered onto the motherboard of the PlayStation 5.

The M.2 SSD Storage easily has the most complicated process as it requires you to remove the outer case of the system. To find out how you can install the FireCuda 530, WD_BLACK SN850 and AORUS 7000S to your PS5, you can check out this tutorial.

The installation process for the USB Extended Storage is simpler although you do need to format the drive. To see how you can format the Samsung T5 and Samsung T7 for the PS5, you can check out this guide.

File Types

The Console Storage offers the best compatibility when it comes to storing different file types. With the internal solid state drive of the PlayStation 5, you can store PS5 games, PS4 games, saved data, screen shots and video clips.

With the M.2 SSD Storage and USB Extended Storage, you can only store PS5 and PS4 games.

Speed

The Console Storage and M.2 SSD Storage should be much faster than the USB Extended Storage when it comes to reading and writing speeds.

Playing Games

You can play both PS5 games as well as backwards compatible PS4 games directly on the Console Storage and M.2 SSD Storage.

With the USB Extended Storage, you can only play backwards compatible PS4 games.

Is the PS5 compatible with HMB or M.2 SATA?

Sony has added support for M.2 solid state drives in the latest firmware update for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

So, can you use a M.2 SATA SSD or an SSD with Host Memory Buffer with this gaming system? You can find out in this guide from Seeking Tech.

Does the PlayStation 5 support M.2 SATA Solid State Drives?

Although a M.2 SATA solid state drive may fit into the M.2 slot of the PlayStation 5, the system does not support the SATA interface as it is too slow to load PS5 games.

The maximum sequential read speed for SATA is 600 MB per second, which is far less than 5500 MB per second speed of the built-in solid state drive of the PS5.

If you install a M.2 SATA solid state drive on the PlayStation 5, you will get an on-screen message upon turning on your system stating that the storage drive is not compatible.

The same message will also list out the supported M.2 requirements. Lastly, you will be asked to turned off the PS5 and remove the M.2 SATA SSD as you won’t be able to use the system until you do so.

Does the PlayStation 5 support Host Memory Buffer?

The PlayStation 5 is not compatible with the Host Memory Buffer interface. However, the game system may still support a M.2 solid state drive with HMB.

With that said, you may get a slower than expected read speeds as a result of using an SSD with Host Memory Buffer.

What M.2 Solid State Drives are Compatible with PS5?

So, what M.2 solid state drives are supported the PlayStation 5? So far, the GIGABYTE AORUS Gen. 4 7000s with Heatsink, Seagate FireCuda 530 with Heatsink and Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 with Heatsink have been confirmed to be compatible with the PS5 right out of the box without the need of adding and/or modifying a heatsink.

If you are interested, you can purchase either of the aforementioned products on Amazon with the following links:

In general, you will need a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a recommended maximum sequential reading speed of at least 5500 MB per second or higher.

Sony also recommends using a single-sided or double-sided heatsink with the storage drive.

Furthermore, your M.2 SSD should also fit into the system. Thus, it should have an overall maximum length of 110 mm (or 4.33 in) as well as an overall maximum width of 25 mm (or 0.984 in). For height, you need 2.45 mm (0.096 in) of space underneath the solid state drive as well as 8 mm (0.314 in) of space above the SSD. In total, the solid state drive should be no taller than 11.25 mm (or 0.442 in).

As you can see, even if your PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD meets the 5500 MB per second maximum sequential reading speed requirement, you still have to worry about whether or not it will actually fit into the PS5 system.

Thus, we recommend sticking with any of the three aforementioned products (GIGABYTE AORUS Gen. 4 7000s with Heatsink, Seagate FireCuda 530 with Heatsink and Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 with Heatsink) that have been officially confirmed so far to be compatible with the PlayStation 5.

If you want to learn about how you can install a compatible M.2 SSD to the PS5, then you can check out this tutorial.
