Is the Q70A a suitable TV for PS5, Xbox Series X and other consoles?

The Q70A is a new Samsung QLED television set. So, how does this 2021 TV fare when it comes to displaying videogames on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S as well as other home consoles?

You can find out in this guide from Seeking Tech.

Quick Summary

The Q70A is a pretty good television set for the PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The new Samsung TV includes a HDMI 2.1 port in addition to supporting features like 120 fps and Variable Refresh Rate. It also features extremely low input lag in game mode.

The HDR capabilities for the Q70A may not be great due to the lack of local dimming zones and only passable brightness levels, but it is good enough to show off the advantages of using the high-dynamic color range.

The only major disadvantage of the Q70A model is the lack of support for the Dolby Vision HDR format, which is being used for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Q70A Screen Sizes

The Q70A is available in the following screen sizes:

  • 55″: QN55Q70AAFXZA
  • 65″: QN65Q70AAFXZA
  • 75″: QN75Q70AAFXZA
  • 85″: QN85Q70AAFXZA

Does the Q70A have HDMI 2.1 ports?

The Q70A comes with four HDMI ports, the first three of which is HDMI 2.0 while the last one is HDMI 2.1.

HDMI 2.0 is good enough to play videogames at 60 frames per second in a maximum resolution of 4K on new consoles. You should also be able to be games at 120 frames per second in a maximum resolution of 1440p.

With HDMI 2.1 you will be able to play at 120 frames per second in a maximum resolution of 4K.

Legacy Consoles Support

The Q70A does not have any composite or component inputs. So, you have to use an adapter if you want to plug in consoles like the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, Dreamcast and Xbox.

Since this model does have an antenna/cable input, you should be able to directly connect older systems such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, SNES and Sega Genesis.

HDR Features

The Q70A is compatible with HDR10 and HDR10+ formats in addition to featuring a wide color gamut. This model does not support the Dolby Vision format or come with any local dimming zones.

HDR10 is used by the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

The two Xbox Series systems also support the Dolby Vision format.

Q70A’s HDR Brightness in Game Mode

In order to highlight the advantages of HDR, we recommend getting a television that is capable of displaying at least 500 nits of brightness when HDR is enabled.

The Samsung Q70A is able to achieve this minimum threshold at every scene tested by RTINGS.com with the exception of HDR Peak 2% Window and HDR Sustained 2% Window.

Overall, the HDR brightness levels of the Q70A is good enough but not all that great.

You can check out the test results below (via RTINGS):

  • Real Scene Highlight: 560 nits
  • HDR Peak 2% Window: 257 nits
  • HDR Peak 10% Window: 587 nits
  • HDR Peak 25% Window: 585 nits
  • HDR Peak 50% Window: 584 nits
  • HDR Peak 100% Window: 584 nits
  • HDR Sustained 2% Window: 252 nits
  • HDR Sustained 10% Window: 584 nits
  • HDR Sustained 25% Window: 582 nits
  • HDR Sustained 50% Window: 582 nits
  • HDR Sustained 100% Window: 582 nits
  • HDR ABL: 0.053

Adaptive Sync Support

When it comes to adaptive sync support (which helps improve the frame rate to prevent stutters and tearing), the Q70A is capable of FreeSync and Variable Refresh Rate but not GSYNC.

Variable Refresh Rate is currently being used by the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. The same feature is expected to also come to the PlayStation 5.

Q70A’s Input Lag

The Q70A has excellent input lag reduction when you used its game mode. According to tests done by RTINGS, this model has a maximum latency of 11.0 ms at the 60 Hz, 120 Hz and VRR refresh rates in 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolutions.

We recommend less than 30 ms of lag if you don’t want an unresponsive gaming experience. So, the Q70A is an excellent TV in that regard.

You can find the input lag test results below (via RTINGS):

  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 11.0 ms
  • 1080p resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 5.6 ms
  • 1440p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 10.2 ms
  • 1440p resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 5.6 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 10.0 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate + 10 bit HDR (Game Mode Enabled): 10.9 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz at 4:4:4: 10.0 ms
  • 4K resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 5.6 ms
  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 83.3 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 70.0 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate With Interpolation: 20.9 ms

Is the Q70A good for PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

The Q70A is a pretty good television set for the new consoles as it comes with a HDMI 2.1 port in addition to support for 120 fps and Variable Refresh Rate. This model also features extremely low input lag when its game mode is enabled.

Although it does not have any local dimming zones, its HDR brightness level is still passable.

The only major downside is the lack of support for the Dolby Vision HDR format.

Is the Q70A good for Switch, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X?

The aforementioned HDR pros and cons also apply to HDR-enabled games on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

Of course, the great input lag reduction also applies to older HDMI consoles, including the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

Is the Q60A a suitable TV for PS5, Xbox Series X and other consoles?

The Q60A is one of several Samsung 4K television sets released in 2021. So, how does this TV fare when it comes to playing games on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S as well as other gaming consoles?

You can find out in this Seeking Tech guide.

Quick Summary

The Q60A does not come with any HDMI 2.1 ports or local dimming zones. The 2021 television set also does not support 120 fps, 1440p, Dolby Vision or Variable Refresh Rate.

With subpar HDR brightness levels as well, the Q60A is lacking when it comes to taking advantage of the graphical features of the new PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

The TV does have low input lag when you use its game mode, however. So, it is a decent set to play non-HDR games.

Q60A Screen Sizes

The Samsung Q60A is available in the following screen sizes:

  • 43″: QN43Q60AAFXZA
  • 50″: QN50Q60AAFXZA
  • 55″: QN55Q60AAFXZA
  • 60″: QN60Q60AAFXZA
  • 65″: QN65Q60AAFXZA
  • 70″: QN70Q60AAFXZA
  • 75″: QN75Q60AAFXZA
  • 85″: QN85Q60AAFXZA

Does the Q60A have HDMI 2.1 ports?

The Samsung Q60A does not have any HDMI 2.1 ports. Instead, this television comes equipped with three HDMI 2.0 ports.

HDMI 2.0 will allow you to play games at up to 60 frames per second in 1080p and 4K.

You won’t be able to use the Q60A to play games at 120 frames per second or 1440p.

Legacy Consoles Support

The Q60A does not include a composite input, which means that you need to purchase an adapter to connect consoles like the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii and Xbox.

This Samsung 2021 TV does include a cable/antenna tuner that you can use to directly connect retro systems like the NES, Super NES and Sega Genesis.

HDR Features

The Q60A supports HDR10, HDR10+ and wide color gamut. The TV does not support Dolby Vision nor does it come with any local dimming zones.

The HDR10 format is used by consoles like the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

The Xbox Series consoles also supports Dolby Vision.

Q60A’s HDR Brightness in Game Mode

The Q60A is a little below average when it comes to HDR brightness levels. For HDR to begin to stand out, we recommend getting a television that can produce at least 500 nits.

According to tests done by RTINGS.com, Q60A isn’t able to hit that minimum threshold in any of the scenarios that were tested. Overall, the 2021 Samsung television has a Real Scene Highlight of 468 nits.

You can check out the HDR brightness level test results for the Q60A below (via RTINGS):

  • Real Scene Highlight: 468 nits
  • HDR Peak 2% Window: 214 nits
  • HDR Peak 10% Window: 489 nits
  • HDR Peak 25% Window: 488 nits
  • HDR Peak 50% Window: 487 nits
  • HDR Peak 100% Window: 487 nits
  • HDR Sustained 2% Window: 211 nits
  • HDR Sustained 10% Window: 488 nits
  • HDR Sustained 25% Window: 487 nits
  • HDR Sustained 50% Window: 487 nits
  • HDR Sustained 100% Window: 486 nits
  • HDR ABL: 0.054

Adaptive Sync Support

The Q60A does not support any of the three adaptive sync features: FreeSync, GSYNC orVariable Refresh Rate. These are used to prevent any stutters and tearing associated with games that have inconsistent frame rates.

Variable Refresh Rate is currently supported by the Xbox Series S and X. The same adaptive sync feature is also expected to be added to the PlayStation 5 in the future.

Q60A’s Input Lag

The Samsung Q60A has excellent input lag reduction when you use its game mode.

For a low-latency gaming experience, we suggest getting a television set that has less than 30 ms of lag.

According to tests done by RTINGS, this Samsung TV model was able to fall way below that upper limit at 1080p as well as 4K resolution.

You can find the input lag test results for the Q60A below (via RTINGS):

  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 10.1 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 10.2 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate + 10 bit HDR (Game Mode Enabled): 10.0 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz at 4:4:4: 10.0 ms
  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 76.3 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 59.7 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate With Interpolation: 26.3 ms

Is the Q60A good for PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

We don’t recommend getting a Q60A for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S if you want to take advantage of the new consoles.

The television set does not come with any HDMI 2.1 ports. It also does not support 120 frames per second, 1440p, Dolby Vision or Variable Refresh Rate.

Due to the lack of local dimming zones and the lack of acceptable HDR brightness levels, the TV is also subpar for HDR gaming.

Is the Q60A good for Switch, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X?

The Q60A does come with great input lag reduction when you are using its game mode. So, it is a pretty good television set for older HDMI consoles like the PS3, PS4, Wii U, Switch and Xbox One.

As we stated above, the Q60A is below average at displaying HDR content. So, we don’t recommend using it on HDR-enabled games on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

How to fix power, heating, popping and humming issues with Q70A/Q80A/QN85A/QN90A

When using the new Samsung Q70A, Q80A, QN85A or QN90A TV, you may encounter several issues related to its power, heat, popping sounds and/or humming noises.

If you are experiencing any of the above, then you can follow this Seeking Tech guide to find some potential fixes.

How to fix power issues with the Q70A, Q80A, QN85A or QN90A

If your new Samsung QLED or NEO QLED television set is not powering on, you can take the following steps:

1. The first step we recommend taking is to check to see if there is any power left on the Samsung Smart Remote that came with the system.

Press the power button on the remote controller and then check to see if the front tip of the remote is emitting a red light. If it isn’t, you need to recharge or replace its batteries.

2. If the remote seems to be functioning normally, the next step is to check the infrared sensor of your television.

The sensor is located at the bottom of the TV in either the middle or the right side. You may need to use a mirror or other reflective surface to see if there is a red light.

If you don’t see any lights underneath the television, try to unplug it and plug it back in again.

You may also want to try a different power outlet.

3. If you see the red light sensor on both your remote and television set, press the power button on your remote.

4. The red light under your TV should disappear, which should indicate that your TV is now powered on.

You can also use your finger to tap the screen, if you see a blinking reaction, then it means that the TV is receiving power.

5. If you are still seeing a black screen at this point, try pressing the Home button on your remote controller.

If you see the Home Screen menu appear, this will mean any external device you have connected to your Samsung television set may not be connected correctly.

In this case, you should check to see if the cables connecting the TV to the external device aren’t loose from the ports. You should also check for any potential damage on the cable and ports.

You can also go the Source settings from the Home Screen to see if your TV is playing the correct input.

How to fix heating issues with Q70A, Q80A, QN85A and QN90A

If you feel that your television set is getting too hot, then you most likely have nothing to worry about.

The Q70A, Q80A, QN85A or QN90A TVs will generate a lot of heat when turned on for an extended length. The heat will appear at the top as well as the bottom of the screen.

If you are worried about any potential overheating issues, make sure that there isn’t anything covering the top vents or the bottom side. You may also want to leave some room on the backside of the TV to give more air to help the screen dissipate the heat.

How to fix the popping sounds with Q70A, Q80A, QN85A and QN90A

If you occasionally hear your new QLED or Neo QLED television set making a popping sound, then you don’t have anything to worry about.

That particular noise is made due to the expansion and contraction of the outer casing due to the heat being generated inside the TV. This is perfectly normal and your television is completely safe to use.

To reduce the popping noise, make sure that you are giving enough air for at the top side, bottom side and backside on your TV. You may also want to clean the top vents if there is any dust buildup.

How to fix humming noises with Q70A, Q80A, QN85A and QN90A

When using your Q70A, Q80A, QN85A or QN90A, you may hear a humming noise. This is due to the internal circuity using a lot of electricity.

The humming is considered to be normal. With that said, you can still reduce this noise by lowering your TV’s brightness level. To do so, you need to do the following:

1. Press the Home button on your Samsung remote.

2. Select Settings.

3. Select Picture.

4. Select Expert Settings.

5. Select Brightness.

6. Lower the brightness level.

Keep in mind that, by lowering brightness, you will end up with a darker image on your screen.

Thus, you may be better off leaving the brightness level as is. Instead, you can either turn up the volume of your television or use a headphone to drown out the humming noise.
