PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium benefits for PS3, PSP and Vita owners

Sony recently announced a revamp to PlayStation Plus as the subscription has been extended to the Essential, Extra and Premium tiers.

For the uninformed, PlayStation Plus originated on the PlayStation 3 home console in 2010 and was eventually expanded over to the PSP and Vita handhelds in the following years. So, how do the new changes affect these older gaming systems?

You can find out in this article from Seeking Tech.

Can you stream PS4 and PS5 games via PlayStation Plus Premium on PS3, Vita and PSP?

With PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, you are able to stream PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PSP games over the cloud. The streaming feature is currently limited to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC.

The PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita systems won’t be able to stream any of the PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PSP games from the PlayStation Plus Premium service.

Can you keep your previously redeemed monthly PS3, PSP and Vita games?

If you previously redeemed monthly PS3, PSP and Vita games through the original PlayStation Plus service, then you need to stay subscribe to the newer PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra or PlayStation Plus Premium tier in order to be able to play these titles.

Will you be able to play PS3 and PSP games on PlayStation Plus Premium on their native systems?

While the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription will offer a selection of PS3 and PSP games, these titles can’t be played on their native consoles.

Instead, you can download PSP games and play them directly on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. You can also stream PS3 and PSP games on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles in addition to the PC.

What will happen to your current PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now subscription?

If you are currently subscribed to the PlayStation Plus and/or PlayStation Now, then your subscriptions will be converted over.

If you are a PlayStation Plus member, then you will be converted over to PlayStation Plus Essential. With Essential you will get the same benefits as before, which includes the following:

  • At least two downloadable monthly games playable on PS4 and PS5
  • PlayStation Store Discounts
  • Cloud storage for saved files
  • Online multiplayer access for select games

If you are a member of PlayStation Now, then your subscription will automatically convert over to PlayStation Plus Premium. With the most expensive tier, you will gain access to the following:

  • All the benefits from PlayStation Plus Essential
  • A library of up to 400 downloadable games playable on PS4 and PS5
  • Up to 340 classic games playable on PS4 and PS5 (PlayStation 3 games can only be streamed)
  • Game trials for select games
  • Streamable PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PSP games playable on PS4, PS5 and PC

If you are currently subscribed to both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, then your subscriptions will be converted over to PlayStation Plus Premium.

If your current PlayStation Now subscription expires before your current PlayStation Plus subscription, then your PlayStation Plus Premium will be reverted back to PlayStation Plus Essential once your PlayStation Now subscription ends.

How to fix A80K, A90K, A95K, X80K, X85K, X90K, X95K and Z9K app issues

The Sony A80K, A90K, A95K, X80K, X85K, X90K, X95K and Z9K support media apps like Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Netflix, Crunchyroll, YouTube and more.

If you are experiencing issues with using the built-in applications on these television sets, then you can take a look at this troubleshooting article from Seeking Tech.

1. The first step we recommend is to make sure that the app you are trying to use isn’t suffering from a server outage or going through server maintenance.

If the servers are down, then you can simply wait until they are up again before you try using the problematic app.

2. If the app forced your television set to be completely frozen, then we recommend turning off your TV.

To do so, you can press and hold the power button on the remote of the A80K, A90K, A95K, X80K, X85K, X90K, X95K or Z9K for 5 seconds.

If the TV won’t turn off, you can try pressing the power button located directly on it.

If the power buttons on the remote and TV don’t work, then you can unplug your television set from the power outlet. Afterwards, we recommend waiting 2 minutes before you plug the TV set back into the power outlet.

3. You can also try clearing the cache from the troublesome app by taking the following steps:

  • Press the home button on the remote.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Head to Apps.
  • Select the troublesome app. If you can’t find the application, then you need to select See All Apps to view every app currently installed on your television set.
  • Next, select Clear Cache.
  • Finally, select Ok to delete all the temporary files.

4. Furthermore, you can try deleting all the data from the app that is causing you issues. To do so, you need to do the following:

  • On the remote control of your TV, press the home button.
  • Head over to Settings.
  • Go to Apps.
  • Select the app that is causing issues. If you can’t find this app, then you need to select See All Apps to find an expanded list of applications you have installed on the TV.
  • Afterwards, you need to select Clear Data.
  • Next, select Clear All Data.
  • Lastly, select Ok to delete all of the app data file.

5. You should also make sure that the firmware of your A80K, A90K, A95K, X80K, X85K, X90K, X95K or Z9K have been updated to the newest version.

To find out how to do so over the internet or via the USB connection port, you can check out this tutorial.

6. You should make sure that the app that is causing problems have been updated to the latest software release as well.

7. If the app still isn’t working normally, then you can try factory resetting your TV by following this guide.

If none of the aforementioned solution help with fixing the app issues, then we recommend that you avoid using the problematic application until there is a new update to the app and/or your TV.

Instead, you can try using the app on an external device (like a media player or game console) that you can connect to your television set in order to see if the application is more stable when running on the external device.

What to do when your PS5 can’t format the M.2 SSD

When trying to install your M.2 solid state drive on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, you may get an error message saying that the expansion drive can’t be formatted.

To see how you can potentially fix this formatting issue, you can take a look at this troubleshooting article at Seeking Tech.

1. The first step we recommend taking is to remove the M.2 SSD from your PS5 system and then res-insert it again. Afterwards, try to format it again.

2. If you are still getting an error when formatting, then we recommend removing the drive from your system again. This time, insert the SSD into the M.2 slot of a computer.

On the computer, make sure that the storage drive doesn’t have any password or other security setup. If it does, then you need to try to disable it.

3. While you have the SSD inserted in a PC, you should also check if there is a new firmware update available for the storage drive.

4. Furthermore, you can also try formatting the drive from the computer.

After removing the password protection, updating the firmware and/or formatting the M.2 SSD, you should then re-insert the storage drive into the PlayStation 5 and then try to format it.

5. If you are still getting a formatting error, then make sure you have the latest firmware downloaded for your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition.

To update, you need to take the following steps:

  • Turn on your PlayStation 5 console if you haven’t done already.
  • After getting to the home screen menu, which is where you get to select which game to play, select the gear icon on the top right side of the screen in order to go to Settings.
  • In the Settings menu, head over to System.

  • From the right side of the same screen, you then have to select System Software Update and Settings.
  • In the next screen, you need to select Update System Software.
  • Afterwards, you either select to update over the Internet or update by using an USB storage device.

6. You can also try clearing the cache and rebuilding the database of your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition by doing the following:

  • Turn off your PS5 console completely if you haven’t done so already.
  • With the console turned off, press and hold the power button located directly on the system until you hear two beeps. After the second beep you can let go of the power button as the PS5 should boot into the Safe Mode menu.
  • Inside the Safe Mode, you first need to connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with an USB cable.
  • You then need to press the PS button on the DualSense to be able to use the controller.
  • After you gain control, select “5. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” from the Safe Mode menu.
  • You can then select either “1. Clear System Software Cache” or “Rebuild Database.”

7. If none of the aforementioned potential solutions fix the formatting issues, then you might want to try using a different PS5-compatible SSD to see if the new drive is able to format.

If the formatting issues occurred across multiple drives, then you might want to contact Sony as there may be an issue with your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

How to disable Pro Tips cards on PlayStation 5

The new firmware update of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition added Pro Tips cards to the Control Center quick menu.

If you want to remove this feature, you can take a look at this tutorial at Seeking Tech.

What are Pro Tips cards?

Pro Tips cards appear when you press the PS button on your DualSense controller to bring up the Control Center quick menu. These cards are not hard to spot as they are using a blue background and placed to the right of the other cards.

How to remove Pro Tips cards

In order to disable Pro Tips cards from being shown in the system menu of your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, we recommend taking the following steps:

The button is located in between the speaker and the microphone mute button of the game pad.

2. Next, scroll all the way to the right at the top side of the Control Center until you get to the Pro Tips card.

How to fix PS5 voice command issues

The voice command feature was recently added to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. If you are having problems using this feature, then you can take a look at this troubleshooting article from Seeking Tech.

1. The first step we recommend taking is to make sure that your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition system is connected to the Internet as this feature currently requires the PlayStation Network in order to function.

2. It is also important to note that voice command can only recognize the English language as of this moment. Therefore, other languages aren’t supported.

3. You should make sure that your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is in listening mode.

If you have the Listen for “Hey PlayStation!” setting enabled, then you simply need to say “Hey PlayStation” into the microphone in order to put your system in listening mode.

If you have the “Hey PlayStation!” setting disabled, then you need to press the PS button on your DualSense controller and then select the Voice option at the bottom of the screen to put your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition into listening mode.

You can tell that your console is currently in listening mode by looking at the upper left corner as a white circle should appear there.

4. You should also make sure the microphone you are using for the voice command hasn’t been muted.

If you are using the DualSense, for example, you will see an orange light on the microphone button when it is muted. To unmute, press the microphone button on the controller to turn off the orange light.

To see how you can change your microphone settings on your PlayStation 5 system, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Select the gear icon from the home screen to go to the Settings menu.
  • In the Settings menu, select Sound.
  • In the Sound Menu, select Microphone.
  • In the Microphone menu, you can change the microphone input device, adjust the microphone level, change the microphone status when you logged into your PlayStation 5 and/or change the microphone status when starting a voice chat/streaming broadcast.

5. You may also want to increase the response timeout length of the Voice Command feature by doing the following:

  • From the home screen, head over to Settings.
  • Inside of Settings, go to Voice Command.
  • In the Voice Command menu, select Response Timeout.
  • In the pop-up menu, select either Slower or Slowest.

6. Keep in mind that the Voice Command feature is currently in Preview mode, which means that the development team at PlayStation is still working on improving this feature.

Therefore, we recommend keeping your PS5 system up to date to the latest firmware as new software versions may make Voice Command better.

7. It is also important to note that the Voice Command feature is limited. While you can use it to navigate the system menus, you won’t be able to use your voice to navigate the menus when playing a game.

The best way to use Voice Command is to quickly switch between different games and other apps as well as to quickly navigate over to a specific area in the system menus.
