Supported sound output formats for LG A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3

The 2023 LG OLED televisions support a variety of sound output formats. To see which one is supported, as well as you can change the formats from the settings of your TV, you can check out this article.

Before we start, it is important to note that this guide will be mainly covering the A3, B3, C3, G3 and Z3 models.

How to output audio to wired speakers

To start off, you need to change the sound output from the television speakers to the connected wired speaker.

In order to do so, you should make sure that your speaker is plugged into the optical or HDMI ARC/eARC port. Afterwards open the Settings menu of your TV and then head over to Sound > Sound Out > Use Wired Speaker. Finally, select Optical Out Device or HDMI(ARC) Device.

How to change digital sound output format

To change the digital sound output format, you need to go to the Settings menu of your TV and then navigate to Sound > Advanced Settings > Digital Sound Output.

Note: If this option can’t be selected, then make sure you enable Optical Out Device/HDMI(ARC) Device from the aforementioned Use Wired Speaker setting.

You will be able to select between PCM, Auto or Pass Through.

Compatible sound output formats

If you select PCM as the Digital Sound Output, then all the input audio types will output as PCM.

If you select Auto or Pass Through, then the sound output formats depend on the supported format of the connected speaker. The Pass Through option for the Digital Sound Output may not work for some formats; therefore, we recommend going with Auto to start off if you want to output a non-PCM format.

Along with PCM, these LG televisions also supports the following input audio types:

  • MPEG
  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Digital Plus
  • Dolby Atmos
  • Dolby TrueHD (only through HDMI connection)

For the higher resolutions, make sure you set the HDMI Deep Color setting to 4K, which increases the HDMI bandwidth to 48.0 Gb/s. Otherwise, you may not be able to get your screen to display the content, especially at higher frequencies, if you set the same setting to Off.

Furthermore, you should also make sure that you are using a compatible HDMI cable as well as connecting a device that supports the same resolution, horizontal frequency and vertical frequency combinations.

What HDMI cables are compatible with the LG A3, B3 and C3?

In order to get the most out of your LG A3, B3 or C3 television set, you should make sure that you are using the correct HDMI cable to connect your media player, game consoles and other external devices. You can check out this guide at Seeking Tech to see which HDMI cables are compatible with these 2023 OLEDs.

What HDMI ports are included with the LG A3?

The LG A3 comes with three HDMI 2.0 ports.

With that said, you can still connect an external device by using a HDMI 2.1 cable to this television set. However, the bandwidth will be limited to 18.0 Gb/s and you won’t be able to take advantage of HDMI 2.1 features such as Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2a and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC).

What HDMI ports are included with the LG B3?

The LG B3 comes with two HDMI 2.0 ports as well as two HDMI 2.1 ports.

As we stated previously, you can still use a HDMI 2.1 cable to connect to HDMI 2.0 port although you will be limited to HDMI 2.0 bandwidth speeds and features.

What HDMI ports are included with the LG C3?

All four HDMI ports of the LG C3 OLED television set are HDMI 2.1. While you can use older HDMI cables, the bandwidth will be limited and, as a result, you will miss out on some of the more advanced features of this television set.

How to identify HDMI cable types

You should be able to tell the HDMI cable type by looking at the labels of your cable. Some cables may have the version number or bandwidth specs printed directly on them.

You may also be able to look up the name of your cable as the first-generation cables are called HDMI Cable while the second-generation is named HDMI High Speed. The third-gen release is referred to as HDMI Premium while the latest version is titled HDMI Ultra High Speed.

You can find a list of compatible HDMI cable types for the LG A3, B3 and C3 OLEDs below:

  • HDMI 1.0 (HDMI Standard): 4.95 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.1 (HDMI Standard): 4.95 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.2 (HDMI Standard): 4.95 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.3 (HDMI High Speed): 10.2 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.3a (HDMI High Speed): 10.2 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.4 (HDMI High Speed): 10.2 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 1.4a (HDMI High Speed): 10.2 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 2.0 (HDMI Premium): 18.0 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 2.0a (HDMI Premium): 18.0 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 2.0b (HDMI Premium): 18.0 Gb/s bandwidth
  • HDMI 2.1 (HDMI Ultra High Speed): 48.0 Gb/s bandwidth

HDMI Length Requirements

LG recommends that you use an HDMI cable that is no longer than 9.84 feet (or 3 meters) for the A3, B3 and C3. If you use a longer length, then you may experience problems such as input lag, audio delay or a blank screen.

HDMI Bezel Size

The bezel, which is the blocky end in between the cable and connector, should be less than 0.39 inches (or 10 mm) thick and less than 0.7 inches (or 18 mm wide). If the bezel is larger than the aforementioned maximum limits, then you may not be able to plug the HDMI connect all the way in.

If you want to connect a streaming stick to your television set, then you should make sure that it is less than 0.39 inches thick and less than 0.7 inches wide. Otherwise, you may need to get an extension cable in order to fit it in the HDMI port of your OLED screen.

Recap

Overall, we recommend getting a HDMI 2.1 cable that is less than 10 feet in length for all three of these television sets.

Although the LG A3 is only equipped with HDMI 2.0 ports, it should be compatible with the HDMI 2.1 cable. Not to mention that, if you decide to upgrade from the A3 to a newer TV with HDMI 2.1 ports in the future, you won’t have to worry about getting a new cable.

If you are having a difficult time identifying which HDMI 2.1 cable to get, then we recommend picking up the Zeskit Maya 8K 48Gbps Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. You can find this product on Amazon with this link. (#CommissionsEarned).

LG C3 VESA Mounting Pattern

The 42”, 48”, 55”, 65” and 77” C3 screen sizes use the same VESA Mounting Pattern while the 83” version features a different one.

For the uninformed, this pattern measures the horizontal and vertical distances between the four mounting screw holes located on the back of the LG C3. If the mounting bracket doesn’t support these distances, then you won’t be able to attach it to your OLED screen.

VESA Mounting Pattern (example from different TV).

You can find the VESA Mounting Pattern for each screen size below:

  • 42-inch LG C3: 300 mm x 200 mm

What is the official LG C3 wall mount?

LG has an official wall mount that you can use for the 42-inch, 48-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch versions of the C3.

The LG EZ Slim Wall Mount for LG TVs will fit the 300 x 200 VESA Mounting Pattern of the aforementioned screen size. This bracket can also hold up to 110 pounds.

If you are interested, you can purchase the product from Amazon with the following link:

If you have the 83-inch LG C3, then you need to look for a third-party mount instead.

What third-party wall mounts are compatible with the LG C3?

When it comes to finding the right wall mount for your LG C3, the product needs to support the television weight. This most likely won’t be an issue as these televisions should weigh no more than 71.2 lbs. or 32.3 kg.

Furthermore, the mount must also support the VESA Mounting Pattern, which is 300 mm x 200 mm for the 42”, 48”, 55”, 65” and 77” screen sizes. For the 83” version of the C3, the pattern is 400 mm x 400 mm.

When it comes to wall mount types, you can pick between fixed, tilting and full motion products. Fixed mounts can’t be moved while tilting mounts will let you tilt the C3 upwards or downwards. Full motion mounts will let you extend, tilt and swivel your OLED around.
