PS Now vs. PS Plus Essential vs. PS Plus Extra vs. PS Plus Deluxe vs. PS Plus Premium

Sony is folding PlayStation Now into multiple versions of PlayStation Plus.

You can take a look at this comparison guide at Seeking Tech to see what the major differences are between the original Now plan and the new Plus tiers.

Quick Summary

With PlayStation Now going away, you will need to get PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium if you want access to a curated list of downloadable PS4 games. These new Plus tiers will also add downloadable PS5 games.

For downloadable PS2 games, you will need either PlayStation Plus Deluxe or PlayStation Plus Premium in the future. These two versions of Plus are also the only subscription to offer downloadable PS1 and PSP games as well.

When it comes to streaming, you will need to get PlayStation Plus Premium if you would like to continue using this feature from PlayStation Now. With streaming, the library for Plus Premium should be expanded over to the PS1 and PSP games to go along with Now’s offering of streamable PS2, PS3 and PS4 games.

Keep in mind that, when PlayStation Now ceases to exist, your remaining Now subscription length will be converted over to PlayStation Plus Premium.

PS Plus vs. PS Plus Essential vs. PS Plus Extra vs. PS Plus Deluxe vs. PS Plus Premium

PlayStation Plus is being expanded to multiple tiers. So, how does the Essential, Extra, Deluxe and Premium versions of the subscription service compare to the original?

You can find out in this versus guide from Seeking Tech.

Quick Summary

The original PlayStation Plus is the same as PlayStation Plus Essential as you will get monthly games, online multiplayer access, PS Plus Collection and PS5 cloud save backups. In June 2022, the standard PlayStation Plus will be converted over to PlayStation Plus Essential.

PlayStation Plus Extra comes with everything from the original Plus and Essential while also adding an expanded catalog of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games.

Monthly Games

As with the original PlayStation Plus, the new Essential, Extra, Deluxe and Premium tiers will also offer at least two downloadable games every month.

You can play these software releases as long as you are an active member for any version of the PlayStation Plus.

If you have been a subscriber to PlayStation Plus for a very long time, then you may have gotten PS3, PSP and Vita games from the service in the past. To play these on your older PlayStation systems, you will still need to stay subscribed to any of the available Plus tiers.

To find out more about how PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra, PlayStation Plus Deluxe and PlayStation Plus Premium impact the PS3, PSP and Vita systems, you can take a look at this article.

Online Multiplayer Access

Just like the original PlayStation Plus, the new versions are required in order to play online multiplayer for a vast majority of games on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The exceptions include free-to-play releases like Apex Legends, Call of Duty Warzone, Fortnite and Genshin Impact. For Final Fantasy XIV, you also don’t need to subscribe to a PlayStation Plus tier.

Cloud Storage for PS5 Save Files

In order to back up your save files for PlayStation 5 games, you will still need a PlayStation Plus membership.

For PS4 save files, you are able to back up these data through an USB storage device.

PS Plus Collection

The original PlayStation Plus, along with PlayStation Plus Essential, still come with the PlayStation Plus Collection, which is a list of downloadable PS4 games that you can play on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

This perk is exclusive to owners of a PS5 system.

Game Trials

The PlayStation Plus Deluxe and PlayStation Plus Premium are the only two subscriptions to offer game trials that will let your try out select games for a limited amount of time.

Downloadable Games Catalog

The more expensive versions of the PlayStation Plus will offer curated lists of downloadable games.

With PlayStation Plus Extra, you are able to download and play PS4 and PS5 games.

With PlayStation Plus Deluxe and PlayStation Plus Premium, you can download and play PS1, PS2, PSP, PS4 and PS5 games.

Cloud Streaming Games Catalog

The PlayStation Plus Premium is the only version of the service that will allow you to play games over cloud streaming. Along with the PS1, PS2, PSP, PS4 and PS5 games, you will also be able to stream PS3 games.

What will happen to the original PlayStation Plus?

Once the new PlayStation Plus versions are made available, the original PlayStation Plus will be converted over to PlayStation Plus Essential as the two services are the same.

What’s the difference between the PS5 console storage, M.2 SSD and external SSD?

Although you can use an external solid state drive with your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, it is limited in features when compared to the other SSD types that the game console supports.

You can take a look at this comparison guide at Seeking Tech to see what are the main differences between the console storage, M.2 SSD and external SSD.

Quick Summary

The internal console storage of the PlayStation 5 offers the most features as you can store and play both PS4 and PS5 games. Furthermore, it is also the only storage option that can store system data, save files as well as screenshots and videos captured when playing games.

With a PS5-compatible M.2 solid state drive, you can also store and play both PS4 and PS5 videogames although the save files, screenshots and recorded videos will be stored on the internal console storage instead.

For an external solid state drive, you can also store PS4 and PS5 games. However, only PS4 games can be played directly from the external storage. Furthermore, the save files, screenshots and video clips will be saved on the internal console storage.

So, if you are looking to expand the storage capacity of your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Editon system, then we recommend getting a M.2 solid state drive as you will be able to play PS4 and PS5 games directly off of it.

If you are only planning to use an expansion drive for PS4 games, then you can get an external SSD instead.

PS5 Internal Console Storage vs. M.2 SSD vs. External SSD

You can take a look at our comparison table for the internal PS5 console SSD, M.2 SSD and External SSD below.

Connectivity

When it comes to the console storage, the default internal solid state drive of the PS5 is completely soldered on to the motherboard of the game console. As a result, it can’t be removed.

For the M.2 solid state drive, you need to use the M.2 slot of the game console, which you can find by removing the outer case. For this storage option, you will also need a heatsink that will fit inside of the docking bay of your PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition.

An external solid state drive can be connected to the PlayStation 5 system through the USB port.

Sequential Reading Speed

The External SSD option has the disadvantage when it comes to reading speed.

The console storage, as well as a PS5-compatible M.2 solid state drive, have read speeds of 5,500 MB per second.

In comparison, the fastest external solid state drives usually top out at around 2,000 MB per second. Not to mention that the reading speed of the external drive could also be slowed down due to other bottlenecks on the PS5.

Storage Space

You can take a look at the storage capacity ranges for all three PS5-compatible solid state drive types below:

  • Internal Console Storage: 825 GB
  • M.2 SSD: 250 GB to 4 TB
  • External SSD: 250 GB to 8 TB

Storage Content

The internal console storage, external solid state drive and M.2 solid state drive can store both PlayStation 4 games and PlayStation 5 games.

The console storage is the only drive that can also store the system data, save files and the media gallery.

Playable Games

You can play both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games directly off of the internal console storage and M.2 solid state drive.

With an external solid state drive, you can only play PlayStation 4 games. To play a PlayStation 5 game you have stored on the external SSD, you will need to transfer the game data over to either the internal console storage or the M.2 SSD.

PlayStation Plus Essential vs. Extra vs. Deluxe vs. Premium

Sony has announced changes to the PlayStation subscription service. Instead of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, most major regions have three tiers as you can choose between PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra or PlayStation Plus Premium.

In select regions, you can choose between PlayStation Plus Essential, PlayStation Plus Extra or PlayStation Plus Deluxe.

You can take a look at this comparison guide to see what are the major differences between the Essential, Extra, Deluxe and Premium tiers.

Quick Summary

PlayStation Plus Essential is the same as the original PlayStation Plus as you will get online multiplayer access, cloud save backups, exclusive discounts and downloadable monthly games.

PlayStation Plus Extra comes with all of the benefits included in PlayStation Plus Essential and adds a curated list of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games.

PlayStation Plus Deluxe gets all benefits from the Essential and Extra tiers. You will also gain access to downloadable PS1, PS2 and PSP games in addition to free game trials.
