I recently played through the entirety of Super Onion Boy+ on the PlayStation 5 Pro. You can find my playthrough, which includes earning the Platinum Trophy and getting the secret ending, below:
Pros:
- Responsive controls, which results in tight platforming.
- Reminisce of Super Mario World, but also has many unique elements.
- Plus edition adds extra content.
Cons:
- Massive difficulty spike towards the last third of the game.
Overall:
Super Onion Boy started out as a mobile and web browser game before being ported over to the PlayStation 5. Despite that, the game controls pretty much perfectly, especially when it comes to jumping.
The art style should immediately jump out to many players as well. The detailed and charming pixels should remind many of Super Mario World. Not to mention that some of the power-ups and enemies design are similar as well.
With that said, Super Onion Boy does offer some unique elements, such as being able to jump higher while bouncing off enemies, using a shield as extra protection, and many more.
Compared to the original, the Plus edition adds extra content, which includes expanded levels, new power-ups, new bosses, and more.
The only real downside is the massive difficulty spike towards the last third. You will most likely end up losing a lot of lives fighting hordes on enemies in close spaces as well as the brutal fights towards the end.
If you don’t mind the late-game challenge, then Super Onion Boy+ is a must play for fans of classic 2D platformers.
