I recently got the chance to play around 90 minutes of HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Electric Airship.
You can find my gameplay video and impressions below:
Pros:
- Beautiful Halloween-themed art style.
- Creative battles.
- Characters with tons of personalities.
Cons:
- None.
Overall:
HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition is an indie JRPG that takes place in the underworld.
The first thing you notice about the game is the Halloween-themed cartoonish art style, which really makes it stand out. Not to mention that the original soundtrack does a great job at capturing the festive holiday.
In terms of gameplay, HorrorVale uses a turn-based battle system. To deal significant damage, you have to master the elements, as each has advantages and disadvantages on the other.
A few fights can get really creative. One battle in the early game, for example, requires you to use an item on an otherwise invulnerable enemy. In another early battle, you can pay a nagging salesman to go away.
The developer of the game does a great job at building a creative underworld. Along with unique battles, the citizens of HorrorVale have their own personalities and quirks. In fact, you can recruit over 30 of them to join your party.
Based on what I have played so far, HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition is a fun and very creative indie JRPG. If you are a fan of the genre, then you should definitely check this game out.
