I recently try out the first hour of Atomic Owl on a PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by eastasiasoft.
You can find my gameplay below:
Check out my first impressions below:
Pros:
- Stylish pixel art and soundtrack.
- Responsive controls.
- Roguelite elements can be turned off.
Cons:
- Frame rate can dip during intensive scenarios.
Atomic Owl is a 2D action-platformer with Roguelite elements where you play as an owl in a futuristic setting.
The visuals jump out instantly as the environment is filled with a lot of neon colors. Along with an excellent soundtrack, Atomic Owl is dripping with a lot of style.
Gameplay wise, the controls are very responsive, making combat and platforming feels natural. Of course, you will also learn more exploration and fighting abilities as you progress.
If you aren’t a fan of roguelites, then the game also offers the ability to disable this element from the start. This makes restarting after death a lot more manageable.
The only real downside I experienced so far was the massive slowdown that occurred during the boss fight when a lot of enemies were present at once.
The second time I fought it, I cleared out every other enemy beside the boss, and the frame rate remained smooth throughout.
Aside from the FPS issues, Atomic Owl is a pretty fun game that stands out from other 2D action-platformers, in terms of its excellent presentation.
