YAR: Forgotten Throne on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around 90 minutes of YAR: Forgotten Throne on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Axyos Games Entertainment.

You can find my gameplay video below:

You can also check out my first impressions of YAR below:

Pros:

  • Ambitious open-world RPG.
  • English voice acting.
  • Multiple difficulty levels.

Cons:

  • Generally unpolished.

Overall:

YAR: Forgotten Throne is a rather ambitious open-world action RPG. Right at the beginning, the game drops you into a huge environment where you can choose where to go and what to do.

If you happened to stumble across a town, then there are numerous NPCs you can interact with, many of which will give you quests to complete as well. There are others that you can a card-based mini-game with. As an added bonuses, a vast majority of the dialogue are voice in English, adding to the immersion.

Combat-wise, the game relies on a stamina system where every action will deplete your energy. This means that you have to plan accordingly if you don’t want to be put in harm’s way. Fights in the game can go wrong quickly and you will die a lot, especially when fighting an unknown creature for the first time.

Fortunately, the game offers multiple difficulty levels. If you want a more streamlined experience, this means that you can play in easy.

Although YAR is quite ambitious, it is also generally unpolished. The aforementioned combat feels rather clunky and unsatisfying. Not to mention that the menus are clearly designed for mouse controls instead of catering to gamepads.

There was also a bug where the game wouldn’t auto save every minute even though I set it too. As a result, I lost a little bit of progress as a result. Hopefully, the game will keep improving via future patches.

If you don’t mind the current unpolished state, then YAR: Forgotten Throne is worth a look if you are into open-world western RPGs.
