You can find my mini review of R-Type Dimensions 3 below:
Pros:
- Intense horizontal shoot-em-up.
- Force unit adds a lot of strategy.
- Infinite continues.
- Two-player co-op.
Cons:
- None.
Overall:
R-Type Dimensions III is a reimagination of R-Type III: The Third Lightning with brand new 3D graphics and animations. There are also small gameplay tweaks such as making the Advanced difficulty mode available from the start as well as adding separate tracking in co-op mode.
If you don’t find the new 3D visuals appealing, you can switch back to the classic 2D sprites. In fact, you can do it in on-the-fly in real-time with a press of the button. You can also enable or disable scanlines while playing in 2D mode with a press of a button.
After trying out both graphical modes, I found the 2D visuals a lot more appealing than the upgraded 3D graphics. The 3D polygons look to simple and plastic, making the game look a lot more generic than the gritty 2D sprites.
In terms of gameplay, R-Type Dimensions III is an extremely difficult horizontal shoot-em-up. What makes the R-Type series unique is the force unit. This satellite can be attached to the back or front side of the ship, providing defensive and offensive enhancements. You can also leave it detached so that it can act as a secondary ship.
With that said, the levels are filled with environmental death traps and relentless enemies. Thankfully, the game offers an infinite mode where you have unlimited continues. Not to mention that you can also play the game locally with another player.
When R-Type Dimensions III originally launched, fans of R-Type III: The Third Lightning weren’t happy with some of the changes. ININ has since released three major patches addressing the complaints. As a reward for fan’s patient, the digital art book has been made free for everyone and can be accessed from within the game’s menu.
Overall, R-Type Dimensions III is an intense horizontal shoot-em-up that stand among the best of the genre. Even if you aren’t into the 3D look of the re-imagined version, the original 2D version is included. If you are a fan of shoot-em-ups, then this is a can’t miss release.
