I recently got a chance to try out Will You Snail for around an hour on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Jonas Tyroller.
You can find my gameplay video, as well as my first impressions, below:
Pros:
- Unique precision platformer with an adaptive AI hazards.
- Multiple difficulty and accessibility options.
- Funny and charismatic main villain.
Cons:
- Can be hard even in the easiest difficulty setting.
Overall:
Will You Snail is a precision platformer with a unique twist in that you are constantly being watched by an evil AI that will try to predict your moves and add more obstacles in your way. As a result, you have to be constantly on your toes.
The game actually expects you to die a lot, as the AI will eventually relent if you kept failing a particular section, and will reluctantly drop the difficulty down one level. On the flip side, if you are doing well, then the AI will ramp up the difficulty.
You can also set the difficulty on your own in the settings menu at any time. Furthermore, there are accessibility setting where you can disable the adaptive difficulty and make the jumping height more consistent.
Compared to other 2D platformers, Will You Snail has a ton of personality thanks to the evil AI protagonist who will constantly talk smack. If you find him annoying and/or distracting, then you can turn off his appearance as well. If you do so, however, you won’t feel as gratifying when you finally beat a level you were previously struggling and getting mocked at.
The only potential issue is that the game can be quite frustrating even at the easy difficulty setting with all the accessibility options turned on. Some sections can be quite devious and will take a lot of trial-and-error to overcome.
If you don’t mind the difficulty, then Will You Snail is a stellar 2D platformer with a unique adaptive AI difficulty twist to keep you on your toes. Fans of precision 2D platformers should not miss out on this excellent game.
