Silk on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Silk on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Huey Games.

You can check out my gameplay video, as well as my first impressions, below:

Pros:

  • Massive open-world to explore.
  • Trade and resource management.
  • Multiple play styles.

Cons:

  • Lack of fast travel.

Overall:

Silk is a massive open-world game where you take a caravan to explore the ancient silk road. You start out picking the main character, which also determines the difficulty and play style of your run. The merchant, for example, is the easiest route, while the warlord is the hardest.

You can then recruit additional advisors to fill out your caravan. Throughout your travels, you will have to pick between your main character’s decision or the alternate advice given by your advisors.

In order to survive, you have to manage your resources and trade successfully.

Silk is based on classic 1980s strategy RPG titles such as The Lords of Midnight. Although you can fight others, the battles are per-determined based on your stats and will take place automatically off-screen. The gameplay loop revolves around exploring and resource management.

The only main issue I have with the game is the lack of fast travel. It was pretty easy to venture into a hostile territory without little to no resources. With no way to fast travel, you can end up ruining your run quite easily. So, make sure to save early and often, especially in safer areas.

If you are a fan of The Lords of Midnight or other similar titles, then make sure to check out Silk.
