I recently got a chance to play around an hour of The Royal Writ on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Yogscast Games.

Overall:
The Royal Writ is a roguelike deck builder. The stylish design and presentation immediately jumps out, making it feel like a story-book.
In terms of gameplay, your main goal is to defeat the enemy by placing character cards on the left column. Every turn, your character cards will move one space to the left, damaging the enemies. The damage is based on the combined damage output on the field.
Some characters will add to the total damage, while others may multiply the current number. Your goal is to build up enough damage to kill the enemy before your all your character dies.
Death can come by stepping into a hazardous area, being attacked by the enemy, or moving all the way to the right while the opponent is still alive.
The Royal Writ features a short tutorial, meaning you pretty much have to experiment a lot in the beginning to see what the more exotic abilities actually do. Thankfully, each fight can end quickly. So, even if you have to start over from the beginning in each one, it won’t take long to make some progress.
The Royal Writ is a very fun and addicting deck builder with a lot of creative card abilities to keep the gameplay fresh. The only downside is that the game crashed on me twice during my hour-long playthrough. Luckily, the auto-save prevented me from losing any significant process.
If you are a fan of roguelike deck builders, then The Royal Writ is a can’t miss title.
