I recently got a chance to play Doll Defenders for around 1 hour on a PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by eastasiasoft.
You can find my no-commentary gameplay video below:
Check out my first impressions on the game below:
Pros:
- Simple yet very fun twin stick melee game.
- Charming 2D sprites that pays homage to Japanese classics.
Cons:
- Text and menu are hard to read.
Overall: Doll Defenders is a top-down, twin stick melee game. In addition to survival, you must defend the tower from enemy attacks. Each stage features a wave of enemies that you must defeat. You have to replay the stage over again if you die, or the statue gets destroyed.
Overall, Doll Defenders is simple yet very fun. The game offers 12 different weapons to suit your playstyle. Although one is clearly better than the rest, you have to save a lot to get it. I made it to around 2/3rd of the game and still didn’t come close to having enough money.
The only real issue is that the text and menu are too hard to read. The text is way too small unless you sit up close to the screen. The menus are hard to navigate since it’s difficult to tell where the cursor is at any moment.
For its cheap price tag, Doll Defenders is a fun arcade experience if you enjoy similar top-down, twin-stick games.
