Direction Quad (PS5 Pro): First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Direction Quad on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review code provided by eastasiasoft.

You can find my gameplay video below:

You can also check out my impressions of this game below:

Pros:

  • Unique movement mechanics.

Cons:

  • Can be extremely frustrating.

Overall:

Direction Quad is a game where you control a frog, which can only move diagonally. To change his direction, you simply press a button to turn him to the right or to the left.

However, you can only turn him diagonally to the left or right in the direction he is facing. To change where he is facing, you need to use the bumpers in the level.

As you may expect, the controls can get a bit getting used to. It would have helped tremendously if there was an option where you could see the direction where the frog would go before pressing a button. Instead, you have to figure out how the movement works through a lot of trial and error.

Even if you eventually get used to the unique mechanics of Direction Quad, the game requires high precision. You often have to maneuver through small gaps and shoot at switches at the right moment. Failure to do so will result in a restart of the level.

Direction Quad is a hard but unique puzzle platforming game. If you don’t mind the difficulty, then it can be rather fulfilling.
