Angle of Attack on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Angle of Attack on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Ratalaika Games.

You can find my gameplay video, along with my first impressions, below:

Pros:

  • Thrilling fire fights.
  • Beautiful skyboxes.
  • Responsive controls.

Cons:

  • Levels can get overly long.

Overall:

Angle of Attack is a 2D aerial combat. You need to pilot your ship to take out enemies across 30 stages.

To attack, you have your machine gun that has unlimited ammo but will overheat if you don’t let it cool down after continuous usage. You also have a limited number of missiles that you can shoot straight ahead of you.

Of course, the enemy will also attack back. To counter, you are able to boost out of the way and shoot missiles down.

Whether you are attacking or dodging, the controls feel quite responsive, which is important in a fast-paced dog fighting game like this.

While the graphics are pretty simple, the skyboxes look quite beautiful, providing an atmospheric backdrop to the intense battles.

The one major downside to Angle of Attack is that the stages can get overly long. I was making pretty good progress early on until I ran into a level where enemy reinforcements kept coming. Because there aren’t any power-ups or health restore items to pick up, I ended up running out of resources and died, which means I have to start the entire stage all over again.

If you don’t mind the difficulty, then Angle of Attack is a fun arcade dog fighting game worth checking out.
