According to internal testing done by Apple, the battery life for the CR2032 coin cell battery that comes pre-installed with the AirTag is longer than one year.

How to replace the battery in the AirTag?
To replace the battery in the AirTag, you need to do the following:
1. Turn the AirTag over to the back side, which has the Apple logo.
2. Use two fingers to press down on the extruding back cover. Make sure that your fingers are one opposite ends on the cover.
3. With the back cover press down, rotate counterclockwise with your two fingers to unlock the back cover and gain access to the battery compartment.
4. You can replace the battery of the AirTag with any CR2032 coin cell battery.
