I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Infection Free Zone on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Ultimate Games.
You can check out my gameplay video below:
You can find my first impressions of Infection Free Zone below:
Pros:
- Real map data.
- Interesting RTS mechanics based on a zombie apocalypse.
- Impactful dialogue choices.
Cons:
- Steep learning curve.
Overall:
Infection Free Zone is a unique real-time strategy game where you run a settlement during the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
When you first start a new game, it takes a long time to load. This is because the game is actually downloading real world data to use as the in-game map.
Once you get loaded in, you have to scavenge for materials while also being mindful of zombies. Zombies become more prevalent at night, so you will spend most of the time in the dark fending off a possible invasion at your base.
When scouting, you may also meet other humans. However, these interactions can end up being hostile if you aren’t careful.
Another unique feature with Infection Free Zone is the dialogue choices. The game will often present you with multiple options for you to decide what is the best path to take. A scouting team, for example, may encounter an ominous area and is up to you to decide whether you want them to retreat or keep exploring.
The only real issue I have with the game is that the tutorial is quite unhelpful. It took me some time to figure out the basic controls on my own, and there seems to be so much more to the game to learn. A more helpful guide that shows you the rope would have made the onboarding process a lot easier for newcomers like me.
Outside of that, Infection Free Zone offers a unique take on real-time strategy with its zombie apocalypse settings and mechanics. If you are a fan of the genre, then make sure to check this game out.
