I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Pokettohiro on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Ratalaika Games.
You can find my gameplay, as well as my first impressions of the game, below:
Pros:
- Authentic Game Boy Color graphics and sound.
- Simple and fun 2D action-adventure gameplay.
Cons:
- Movement can feel a little slippery.
Overall:
Pokettohiro was originally released for the Game Boy Color in 2024 before being ported over to modern platforms.
The game does a wonderful job at capturing the visuals and sounds of GBC titles, many of which are filled with a lot of charm despite the hardware limitations.
In terms of gameplay, Pokettohiro resembles the Monster World/Wonder Boy games where you explore a non-linear 2D world filled with dungeons. Some of the locations are inaccessible until you rescue the appropriate hero to unlock the ability to play as them.
Overall, Pokettohiro is a great throwback game if you are a fan of the Game Boy Color and/or the Monster World/Wonder Boy series.
