I recently got a chance to play the first hour of Chronicles of the Wolf on a PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review code provided by PixelHeart and PQube. You can watch my gameplay video below:
Pros:
- Classic Castlevania gameplay and visuals.
- Excellent voice acting adds to the gothic atmosphere.
Cons:
- The soundtrack can be too loud in the default setting.
Overall:
Chronicles of the Wolf can easily be mistaken for a classic Castlevania game. The indie does an amazing job with recreating the 2D visual style of the iconic franchise.
Not only that, but it also ups the presentation by featuring excellent voice acting. Although not every line is voiced, the ones that are really added to the gothic atmosphere and dark story.
Gameplay-wise, Chronicles of the Wolf plays exactly like what you expect a Castlevania to play. So, you can expect tight combat versus various nefarious creatures in addition to non-linear exploration with plenty of secrets.
While there are plenty of Castlevania games, none has come close to matching the aesthetics and gameplay as much as Chronicles of the Wolf. If you are a fan of Castlevania, you should definitely enjoy playing this indie as well.
