I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Ratalaika Games.
You can find my gameplay video and written impressions below:
Pros:
- English translation of previously Japan-exclusive RPG.
- Remastered graphics and soundtrack.
- Save states and cheats.
Cons:
- Crashes.
Overall:
Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes was originally a Japan-exclusive RPG that came out for the NES. Thanks to Ratalaika Games is now available in English. Not to mention they also remastered the game by upgrading its graphics and soundtrack.
Sugoro Quest is unique in that exploration takes place over a board game. Using dice rolls, you can land on healing spots, buff spots, debuff spots, random encounters, and more.
During the random encounters, you must also use dice rolls. Your actions will only be executed if your dice number is higher than the enemies.
While the game relies on a lot of randomness, you can tilt the odds in your favor by leveling up, buying better equipment, and using special power dice.
If you don’t feel like grinding to eventually beat all six of the boards, then a cheat menu is available so that you can quickly get through the game.
The only issue I experienced so far is the crashing. Although it didn’t happen in the video, the game crashed shortly afterwards. After doing some research, crashing appears to be quite common. So, you should consider using the save states in the game every so often just in case.
Even with the crashes, Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes offers a unique take to the classic JRPG genre. If you are a fan of JRPGs and looking for something slightly different than what you usually play, then you should give Sugoro Quest a shot.
