Soccer Kid Collection on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Soccer Kid Collection, thanks to a review copy provided by QUByte Interactive.

You can find my gameplay, which shows off both versions of Soccer Kid, below:

You can also find my written impressions below:

Pros:

  • Cheats, save states, and rewind.
  • Filter and resize options.
  • Gallery, jukebox, videos, and other extra content.

Cons:

  • Only two versions.

Overall:

Soccer Kid Collection comes with the MS-DOS version and Super NES version of Soccer Kid. In some regions, the SNES release was re-named The Adventures of Kid Kleets.

The game is a 2D platforming game where you play as a boy who uses his soccer boy as a weapon. There are a significant number of tricks you can do with the ball, such as being able to do headers, perform overhead kicks and stand on top of the ball to jump higher.

While the game does show its age in terms of gameplay, especially when it comes to the fast enemies, the collection includes some quality of life features such as cheats and save states. In the SNES version, you can also rewind time.

In terms of visuals, there are multiple filter and resizing options to fit your tastes. Furthermore, the collection included extra content like art gallery, music playback and cut scenes.

The only downside to the collection is the lack of other ports. Soccer Kid was ported to numerous systems like the 3DO, Jaguar, PS1 and Game Boy Advance.

With that said, the MS-DOS and SNES versions of Soccer Kid are still a lot of fun, especially when you enable cheats to help alleviate the frustrations caused by some of the old school jankiness of the games.
