Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition, thanks to a review copy provided by eastasiasoft.

You can find my gameplay video below:

You can find my first impressions of the remake below:

Pros:

  • Stays true to original while also adding a lot more content.
  • Unlimited continues.

Cons:

  • New graphics makes it harder to distinguish certain platforms and enemies.
  • Constant chatter.

Overall:

Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition is a remake of the classic 1983 game where you explore a labyrinth filled with enemies, obstacles and locked doors. The new version adds a lot more levels to explore.

For better or worse, the new version stays true to the original. As a result, jumping feels clunky at first. You will also die when you fall off from a certain height, which is a lot shorter than what you are normally used to.

While the presentation has been improved, it does come at a deterrence to gameplay. The new graphics, for instance, make obstacles and enemies blend more into the background, making them harder to distinguish.

The antagonist will also talk constantly, which you can fortunately mute in the menus. Even so, the subtitles will still appear at the bottom, blocking your vantage point.

Montezuma’s Revenge is a hard game that is even more frustrating with some of the new design choices added to the remake. Thankfully, the new version also adds unlimited continues, which means that you can beat the game as long as you remain persistent.

If you don’t mind some of its drawbacks and frustrations, then Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition can be a pretty fun 2D platformer.
