Middle Evil: The Priest on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got to play the first hour Middle Evil: The Priest on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review code provided by Ratalaika Games.

You can find my playthrough of the roguelite below:

You can find my impressions of Middle Evil below:

Pros:

  • Fun prayer system.
  • Permanent progression system.
  • Dark and atmospheric soundtrack.

Cons:

  • Over-complicated controls.

Middle Evil: The Priest is a roguelite where you play as a young priest. In order to cleanse a small-town church, you must defeat waves of demonic enemies.

While the priest comes equip with a few weapons, you quickly learn that his prayers are his best abilities for both offense and defense. By combining certain letters, he can light candles, close doors, heal his health, create a shield, and send out a powerful light attack.

To use the prayers, you need to first purchase them. So, you must play the game for a little bit first before you can save up enough for the best abilities.

The beginning can be a little rough as you need to learn a lot of components quickly. The controls can also be overly complicated, especially for newcomers.

Thankfully, Middle Evil has a permanent progressing system as you can buy upgrades with the coins dropped by the defeated enemies. During my playthrough, the difficulty curve became a lot more manageable after learning the Heal and Rays of Goodness prayers.

Overall, Middle Evil: The Priest can be a very fun roguelite if you can overcome its somewhat steep learning curve and focus on using prayers.
