I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Kernel Hearts on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Whitethorn Games.

Pros:
- Expansive semi open-world levels.
- Online co-op for up to 4 players.
- Multiple difficulty settings.

- Single-player can be grindy in the beginning.
Overall:
Kernel Hearts is a Roguelike action RPG. What sets it apart from the others is the level design. Instead of small enemy box sections, you get to explore large semi-open world sections.
When exploring, you get to collect items, stray souls, and lost wishes. You can also level up by fighting enemies. Your end goal is to improve your temporary stats and abilities as much as possible before fighting the boss. If time runs out before you make it to the boss, then your run will end. Of course, dying will also end your run.
Fortunately, there are items you find in chests that will give you permanent stat boosts. If you are playing alone, however, you should expect a big grind at Normal difficulty or higher. During my first hour, I did not make much progress at all, even when it comes to getting my first permanent upgrade.
Thankfully, you can change the difficulty at any time. Better yet, you can play this game online as it supports co-op for up to four players.
Overall, Kernel Hearts is a rather unique Roguelike as it places more emphasis towards exploration thanks to its non-segmented large levels. If you are looking for a more interesting take on the Roguelike genre, then you should definitely give this game a shot.
