I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass, thanks to a review copy provided by Electric Airship. You can find my gameplay video below:
You can check out my impressions of this game below:
Pros:
- Stylish graphics.
- Empathy transformations add depth to combat and exploration.
Cons:
- None
Overall:
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is a 16-bit JRPG that take heavy inspirations from the Earthbound/Mother series. The stylish 2D pixel graphics jump out immediately, especially the great character designs that pop out during the turn-based combat.
The game features an empathy system. After defeating certain enemies, you will learn about their past. Afterwards, you can transform into them, allowing you to use their abilities during combat in addition to exploration.
The slime, for example, can act as a tank during combat. Outside of it, you can use the transformation to slip through small gaps like holes in the floor.
Overall, Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is quite fun so far, with the transformations keeping both the combat and exploration fresh and engaging.
