Alpha Nomos on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Alpha Nomos on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided Critical Hit PR.

You can find my gameplay video below:

You can also check out my first impressions of Alpha Nomos below:

Pros:

  • Rhythm-based combat.
  • Helpful metronome.
  • Stylish presentation.

Cons:

  • Lack of variety.

Overall:

Alpha Nomos is a rhythm-action roguelike that is inspired by Hi-Fi Rush. If you timed certain actions, like attacking and dodging, to the music beat, then you will get an added bonus. These often include increased attack damage or a powerful counterattack.

If you don’t have any rhythm, then don’t worry as the game provides an onscreen metronome to visualize the beats. You can also adjust the latency to help calibrate the input lag.

The added rhythm makes combat more interesting when compared to other action roguelikes since you have to pay attention to the beat while fighting enemies at the same time.

Being a rhythm game, music is vitally important to Alpha Nomos. Thankfully, the soundtrack is great so far with distinct beats that make it easy for the player to play in sync.

The visual presentation is quite nice as well with great character designs to go along with a world that often moves to the beat of the music.

The only real negative to the game is that it can get quite repetitive, at least in the beginning. Each run basically plays the same as you fight the same group of enemies in the same locations. Not to mention that you can only choose between the same temporary power-ups.

While the game provides permanent upgrades with new weapons and moves, these are far and few between at the start of your journey.

If you don’t mind the repetitiveness, then Alpha Nomos is a quality roguelike with a fun rhythm action combat. If you are a fan of the genre, then make sure to check it out.
