Yomawari: Lost in the Dark on PS5 Pro – First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around one and a half hour of Yomawari: Lost in the Dark on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy from NIS America.

You can find my gameplay below:

You can also take a look at my first impressions for Lost in the Dark below:

Pros:

  • Excellent sound design.
  • New eye-closing mechanic adds extra tension.
  • Non-linear exploration.

Cons:

  • None.

Overall:

Lost in the Dark is the third game in the Yomawari series that was originally released in 2022 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. Four years later, it is now available natively on the PlayStation 5.

The sequel made some new changes to freshen up the formula of the first two games. For instance, you can no longer hide in bushes, signs, boxes, and other designated areas.

Instead, you can avoid aggroing a vast majority of the enemies by closing your eyes. If you open your eyes at an inopportune time, or run into enemies during this state, then you will still die. So, you can expect a lot of intense sequences when encountering the various monstrosities patrolling the town.

The exploration in Lost in the Dark is also quite non-linear when compared to the prequels. After a short introduction, you are free to explore the town at your own leisure.

Along the way, you will find items that will unlock memories, which provide hints for locations that you need to visit.

Overall, Lost in the Dark is a great sequel as it adds fresh gameplay mechanics while also retaining the core identities of what makes the Yomawari franchise so beloved. If you are a fan of horror games, then you shouldn’t miss out on any of the games from this series.
