I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Dungeon Antiqua on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by AMATA K.K.
You can check out my gameplay video, as well as my first impressions of this dungeon crawling JRPG, below:
Pros:
- Multiple classes with unique abilities.
- Fast-paced combat.
- Nostalgic 8-bit presentation.
Cons:
- Only three of five party members can melee attack.
Overall:
Dungeon Antiqua is a turn-based dungeon crawling JRPG that is inspired by Wizardy and old-school Final Fantasy.
At the start of the game, you are able to create your party. There are multiple classes available that provide advantages during combat and outside of it.
The Priest, for example, is used as the healer in fights; when you level the class up, you will eventually learn the Teleport spell to instantly leave the dungeon.
Combat resembles the old-school turn-based Final Fantasy games. You have your normal standard attacks to go along with magic spells. The good news is that these fights are fast-paced; if you want, there is even an auto battle option.
The only real downside is that only the first three party members and melee attack. The fourth and fifth party members can attack, but are limited to only using items and spells. So, you should make sure you build your party with this in mind.
Outside of combat, the dungeon is filled with dangerous traps, including chests that can be bobby trapped. It is a good idea to have a Thief, Priest and Mage in your party of they have abilities that make exploration a lot more streamlined.
Overall, Dungeon Antiqua is quite a fun mix of Wizardy and Final Fantasy. If you are a fan of either or both of these, then make sure you check out this game.
