Escape from Umbra on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Escape from Umbra on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Wild Sphere.

You can check out my gameplay video below:

You can find my first impressions of Escape from Umbra below:

Pros:

  • Atmosphere full of dread.
  • Cat that guides you in the right direction.
  • Book that helps with puzzles.

Cons:

  • Only 30 fps.

Overall:

Escape from Umbra is a first-person survivor horror game where you must escape a cursed village.

You will be constantly stalked by a shadowy ghost named Umbra and her minions. While you can defeat her minions with a flashlight, Umbra is invulnerable. When you see her, you need to turn your flashlight off, run, and hide.

Escape from Umbra has a great atmosphere, as there is dread everywhere in the village. You will always have an uneasy feeling, especially when the vibration of the controller and the static noise build up as these indicate that an enemy is nearby.

Luckily, you do have a few advantages. For one, a black cat will point you in the right direction most of the time if you get lost. You will also pick up a book that will help you solve the numerous puzzles in the game.

The only negative of the game is that it only runs at 30 frames per second, even on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Since the game is pretty slow placed, the frame rate never really hinders the gameplay. Still, having 60 fps would have been nice.

Aside from the frame rate, Escape from Umbra is a great survivor horror game teeming with atmospheric dread.
