Beholgar 2 on PS5 Pro: First Impressions

I recently got a chance to play around an hour of Beholgar 2 on the PlayStation 5 Pro, thanks to a review copy provided by Dolores Entertainment.

You can find my gameplay video below:

You can also check out my impressions of the game so far below:

Pros:

  • Unique and gritty graphics.
  • Streamlined Metroidvania exploration.

Cons:

  • Pressing up to interact with objects can cause unintended issues.

Overall:

Beholgar 2 stands out from the rest of Metroidvanias with its unique look. The game features gritty 2D pixels in a similar vein to classic Mortal Kombat. Not to mention that some of the character designs are heavily inspired by Conan the Barbarian.

In terms of gameplay, Beholgar 2 is pretty basic when it comes to combat. You basically have one melee combo along with a throwable sub-weapon that has limited stock.

With that said, the game can be quite challenging as single enemies can easily dwindle your life bar if you play too carelessly. Thankfully, there are plenty of checkpoints littered throughout.

Not to mention that each of the maps is quite small and manageable when compared to other games of the same genre. While you may get lost, you can often find where you need to go by looking at the in-game map.

The only real issue I have with the game is that you push up to interact with objects. If you are using the left analog stick to move, then the game often thinks that you are trying to interact with an object when you are simply passing through to the left or right. This happened a lot at save points.

Aside from that minor annoyance, Beholgar 2 is a fun, unique-looking Metroidvania game with streamlined exploration.
