What’s the difference between the LG A2, B2, C2 and G2 for gaming?

In 2022, LG released the A2, B2, C2 and G2 television sets. So, which of these 4K OLED screens perform the best when it comes to PC and console gaming (especially the newer PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S systems)?

You can find out in this comparison guide between these four LG TVs.

Quick Summary

The G2 is the best out of the 2022 LG 4K OLED televisions when it comes to gaming as it offers the highest HDR brightness output along with the lower input lag. Furthermore, it also comes with four HDMI 2.1 ports, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, Dolby Vision as well as support for FreeSync, Adaptive Sync and Variable Refresh Rate.

While it doesn’t get as bright as the G2, the LG C2 has decent enough brightness if you are planning to play games in a darker room. The C2 also has excellent input lag reduction in addition to supporting the same next-generation display features as the G2. So, if you find that the LG G2 is out of your price range, then the C2 is a great alternative.

The LG B2 is also a very good alternative as it can actually get a little bit brighter than the C2. The only drawback with the B2 is that it only comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports as opposed to four.

The A2 is easily the worst out of this group for gaming as it does not support HDMI 2.1, 120 refresh rate, FreeSync, Adaptive Sync or Variable Refresh Rate. If you want a future-proof set, then we suggest getting any of the three aforementioned models instead.

HDMI Ports

Unlike the other 2022 LG 4K OLED screens, the A2 series comes with three HDMI 2.0 ports. The B2 features four HDMI ports, half of which are HDMI 2.0 while the others are HDMI 2.1.

Both the C2 and G2 models feature four HDMI 2.1 ports.

For the uninformed, the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series X console can be connected to HDMI 2.1 right out of the box to take advantage of all the advanced display features.

Although the Xbox Series S also supports HDMI 2.1, you will need to get a HDMI 2.1 cable as this console only comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable.

You can find a breakdown of the HDMI port versions for each of these televisions below:

A2:

  • HDMI Port #1: HDMI 2.0
  • HDMI Port #2: HDMI 2.0
  • HDMI Port #3: HDMI 2.0

  • HDMI Port #3: HDMI 2.1
  • HDMI Port #4: HDMI 2.1

Legacy Consoles Support

None of the 2022 LG 4K OLED television sets support composites or component inputs. Therefore, a HDMI adapter is needed if you want to connect consoles that use these cables, which includes the Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, PS1, PS2, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and Xbox.

The A2, B2, C2 and G2 do come with an antenna/cable input, which should let you directly connect your NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis and other similar old school systems.

HDR Features

When it comes to HDR features, these television sets also support Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and Wide Color Gamut.

For the uninformed, the Dolby Vision HDR format is currently used by select Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S games. HDR10 is the more commonly used format as it is supported by games running on PC, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Peak HDR Brightness in Game Mode

According to hands-on testing done by RTINGS.com, the G2 is heads and shoulders above the rest of the 2022 LG OLED 4K televisions as it can reach up to 972 nits when using the game optimizer mode.

The second best is, surprisingly, the LG B2, which can reach up to 632 nits. The C2 is slightly dimmer at 622 nits. The dimmest out of this group is the A2, which can output 496 nits in brightness at the maximum when game optimizer mode is used.

To get a good HDR image, a television set should be able to output 700 nits in brightness. If you are playing HDR-enabled games in a dark room, however, then anything above 600 nits should be fine as well.

Native Refresh Rate

When it comes to the native refresh rate, the LG A2 is limited to 60 Hz as it can only display games at up to 60 frames per second.

The LG B2, C2 and G2 are 120 Hz television sets as all three are able to display videogames at up to 120 frames per second.

Select games on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are capable of running at more than 60 fps, which should lead to a smoother and less laggy experience.

Adaptive Sync Support

The A2 does not come with any adaptive sync support, which is designed to help remove stuttering and screen tearing when PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S games that are running at a unstable frame rate.

On the other hand, the B2, C2 and G2 support the following:

  • FreeSync
  • GSYNC
  • Variable Refresh Rate

Input Lag in Game Mode

When it comes to input lag when the game optimizer mode is used, the LG G2 features the lowest latency across the board, according to hands-on testing done by RTINGS. The C2 has the second lowest input lag out of this group.

With that said, the differences are really minute as the latency gap, from best to worst, is just a little bit over 1 millisecond.

Overall, you should get really responsive televisions no matter which 2022 LG 4K OLED screen you own.
