QNED90 vs. QNED99: Which is the LG Better Gaming TV?

The QNED90 and QNED99 are both MiniLED televisions that were released in 2021. So, which of these LG TVs is better for playing videogames on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch and other systems?

Quick Summary

Thanks to a brighter HDR display in addition to slightly lower input lag, the LG QNED MiniLED 90 is a better gaming television than the LG QNED MiniLED 99. Not to mention that the QNED90 is the only television in this comparison to feature adaptive sync as it supports FreeSync, GSYNC and Variable Refresh Rate.

The MiniLED 99 does come with two additional HDMI 2.1 ports when compared to the MiniLED 90. While the QNED99 is the only one out of these two TVs to support 8K, the input lag is very noticeable at that resolution.

The QNED90 comes with four HDMI ports, half of which are HDMI 2.1 while the other half is HDMI 2.0 ports. The QNED99 comes with four HDMI 2.1 ports.

Native Resolution

The QNED90 has a native resolution of 4K while the QNED99 has a native resolution of 8K.

Native Refresh Rate

Both of these LG Mini LED TVs have a native refresh rate 120 Hz.

As a result, you will be able to play games at 120 frames per second at 1080p and 4K on the PlayStation 5. With the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, you will be able to play games at 1080p, 1440p and 4K.

For older consoles, the maximum frame rate is 60 per second.

Legacy Consoles Support

The QNED90 and QNED99 each comes equipped with an antenna/cable input that you should be able to utilized for the NES, Super NES and Sega Genesis.

Neither of these televisions support composite input. As a result, you will need some kind of composite-to-HDMI adapter to connect systems like the N64, GameCube, Wii, PS1, PS2, Saturn, Dreamcast and Xbox to these Mini LEDs.

HDR Features

The QNED90 and QNED99 support both the Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats.

Dolby Vision is currently limited to only the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

HDR10 is more commonly used as it is supported by the PC, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

Contrast Ratio

When it comes to the contrast ratio, the QNED90 has the better native contrast while QNED99 has the better contrast when local dimming is used.

According to tests done by RTINGS.com, LG QNED90 should be able to output a brighter HDR picture than the LG QNED99.

The QNED90 can reach 853 nits when you are using its game mode settings when playing a HDR game, which is 61 nits more than the QNED99.

Adaptive Sync Support

The QNED90 supports FreeSync for computers with AMD graphics cards, GSYNC for PCs with NVIDIA graphics cards as well as Variable Refresh Rate for the PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

All three adaptive sync modes are designed to reduce stuttering and screen tearing.

Unfortunately, the QNED99 does not support any of these three features.

Input Lag in Game Optimizer Mode

When you compare the same resolution and refresh rate settings, the QNED90 has slightly lower input lag than the QNED99 according to tests conducted by RTINGS.com. However, the differences are only 0.8 millisecond at most.

It should also be noted that, while the QNED99 is the only TV in this comparison to support 8K gaming, the experience is very laggy.
