QN800A vs. QN900A: Which is the Better 8K Neo QLED Gaming TV?

The QN800A and QN900A are two 8K Neo QLED television sets that were released by Samsung in 2021. So, which of these is better when it comes to playing games on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X as well as other gaming systems?

Quick Summary

The Samsung Neo QLED QN900A has a higher contrast ratio when compared to the Samsung Neo QLED QN800A. On the other hand, the QN800A features higher HDR brightness levels than the QN900A.

These 8K television sets both come with HDMI 2.1 in addition to supporting FreeSync, Variable Refresh Rate and 120 frames per second. However, the QN900A is the only one to support GSYNC.

The input lag reduction for both TVs in game mode are also pretty much identical.

If you are planning to play games in an overly bright room, then we recommend getting the QN800A due to the brighter HDR levels. Otherwise, we suggest getting the QN900A due to the better contrast and support for GSYNC.

Screen Sizes

HDMI Ports

Both of these 8K television sets are equipped with four HDMI 2.1 ports.

HDMI 2.1 is needed in order to play console games at 120 frames per second in 4K. You can also play games at 60 frames per second in 8K on consoles.

HDMI 2.1 is currently supported by the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Although the Xbox Series S also supports HDMI 2.1, the console only comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable. Therefore, you have to purchase a HDMI 2.1 cable in order to take advantage of the HDMI 2.1 benefits. With that said, the Series S is not powerful enough in a vast majority of cases to be able to run games at 120 frames per second in 4K.

Legacy Consoles Support

When it comes to being able to connect consoles that don’t use HDMI, the QN800A and QN900A come equipped with an antenna tuner that you can use on systems such as NES, Super NES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16.

Neither of these 8K TVs support composite or component inputs. So, an adapter is needed if you want to connect with console like the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and Xbox.

Contrast Ratio

When it comes to contrast ratio, the Samsung QN900A is slightly better than the Samsung QN800A.

The QN900A model has a bigger advantage over the QN800A model when local dimming is utilized.

The native contrast is considered to be good for both of these television sets. When local dimming is used, these TVs have excellent contrast ratios.

Wide Color Gamut

The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X use the HDR10 format.

Although the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X are also compatible with Dolby Vision, that format isn’t supported by either the QN800A or QN900A.

Game Mode HDR Brightness

While both of these 8K televisions can produce excellent HDR brightness levels when you use the game mode settings, the Samsung QN800A can get brighter overall than the Samsung QN900A.

According to tests done by RTINGS, the QN800A can reach as high as 1,590 nits when playing a videogame as opposed to the 1,104 nits of the QN900A.

In order to get a quality HDR image, we recommend getting a television screen that can produce at least 500 nits. The QN800A was able to pass that threshold in all scenarios tested. The QN900A was also able to pass that threshold in every scenario except for when the screen displays a completely white image.

Adaptive Sync Support

When it comes to adaptive sync, both of these television sets support FreeSync and Variable Refresh Rate, which are used to eliminate stutters and screen tearing when playing a game.

FreeSync is supported by AMD graphics cards on PC while Variable Refresh Rate is currently supported by the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series S (the PS5 should also add support for VRR in a future firmware update for the console).

The QN900A is the only one to officially support GSYNC, which is used by NVIDIA graphics cards on PC.

Game Mode Input Lag

These Samsung Neo QLEDs are excellent when it comes to input lag reduction when you used the game mode settings.

The two television sets are basically virtually tied in regards to latency as the differences are often just fractions of a millisecond apart.

If you want a responsive experience, then you can go wrong with either of these two 8K sets.
