ProGrade Digital has two second-generation CFexpress Type B Memory Cards with the Cobalt Series and Gold Series. So, what are the main differences between the two?

Quick Summary

The ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B 1700 Memory Card Cobalt Series has substantially faster minimum sustained write speed when compared to the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B 1700 Memory Card Gold Series.

Therefore, the Cobalt version is more suitable for 6K and 8K video capture, especially without any compression.

The Gold version is mainly designed for 4K capturing. With that said, you will need the Cobalt card for recording uncompressed 4K videos at 60 frames per second.

You will still be able to capture videos at 6K/24fps and 8K/24fps using ProRes422HQ as well as 6K/24fps using ProRes4444 with the Gold card.

Aside from the speed differences, the two cards are the same when it comes to general features and durability.

Maximum Writing Speed

The 325 GB and 650 GB versions of the 1700 Cobalt Series as well as the 512 GB and 1 TB versions of the 1700 Gold Series have the same maximum writing speed. The 128 GB and 256 GB are both 100 MB per second slower than the other memory cards.

The Cobalt does have a big speed advantage when it comes to the minimum sustained writing. Both the 325 GB and 650 GB Cobalt memory cards are 1000 MB per second faster than the 512 GB and 1 TB Gold memory cards. The 128 GB and 256 GB Gold cards are even slower.

Capture Performance

When it comes to capturing videos, the higher minimum write speeds of the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Cobalt makes it more suitable at recording in 6K and 8K resolution, especially in uncompressed format.

The Gold Series memory cards are still good enough at capturing 4K footage with the ProRes422HQ and ProRes4444. The gold cards can also record uncompressed 4K at 24 frames per second, ProRes422HQ and ProRes4444 6K at 24 frames per second as well as ProRes422HQ 8K at 24 frames per second.
