Plugable Nintendo Switch Ethernet Adapters: USB 2.0 vs. USB 3.0 vs. USB-C

Plugable has three Wired Internet LAN Adapters that are compatible with the Nintendo Switch. So, which of these will best fit your needs: the USB2-E100, USB3-E1000 or USBC-E1000? You can find out in this comparison guide.

Quick Summary

Although the Plugable USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter (USB3-E1000) has a faster USB connection and network speed than the Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter (USB2-E100), the Nintendo Switch won’t be able to take advantage of the advantages due to the lack of support for USB 3.0.

With that said, we still recommend getting the Plugable USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter as it is more future-proofed than the Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter. If Nintendo decides to update the USB port of the Switch to USB 3.0, then you should be good to go if you have the USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter to take advantage of faster speeds.

Not to mention that the USB 3.0 version of the network adapter is also better if you want to use a wired internet connection with other compatible devices that have USB 3.0 ports.

However, the Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter is the only product out of this group to also support the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U in addition to the Nintendo Switch. So, if you want to use a wired internet connection for all of these gaming systems, then you should pick up the USB 2.0 version of the network adapter instead.

Last but not least, the Plugable USB-C to Ethernet Adapter (USBC-E1000) is the only product that can be used on the Nintendo Switch Lite as well as the regular Nintendo Switch in undocked handheld mode. The USB-C version has the same USB connection and network speeds as the USB 3.0 version, which means that it will also be throttled by the Switch’s USB 2.0 limitations.

Wii and Wii U Compatibility

The USB2-E100 is the only adapter in this versus guide to also be compatible with the older Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U consoles. So, if you would like to use wired internet on the Wii, Wii U and Switch, then the Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter is the only available option.

Compatibly with Other Devices

The LAN adapters can also be used with other devices depending on what operating system is used. You can find a list of supported operating systems below:

Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter (USB2-E100):

  • Linux Kernel 2.6.35 or higher
  • MacOS 10.6 to 10.14
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista

  • Windows 8.x
  • Windows 10

USB Connection

The USB2-E100 Adapter uses the USB 2.0 connection, which provides a transfer speed of up to 480 Mbps. The USB3-E1000 use USB 3.0 while the USBC-E1000 use USB-C, both of which provides transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps. You can find the full breakdown below:

  • USB2-E100: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps)
  • USB3-E1000: USB 3.0 (5 Gbps)
  • USBC-E1000: USB-C (5 Gbps)

Although the dock that comes with the Nintendo Switch is equipped with USB 3.0 ports, these only function as USB 2.0 ports. As a result, you will be limited to USB 2.0 transfer speeds even if you used the Plugable USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter (USB3-E1000) or Plugable USB-C to Ethernet Adapter (USBC-E1000).

Network Speed

The Plugable USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter support network speeds of 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. The Plugable USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter and Plugable USB-C to Ethernet Adapter both support network speeds of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps.

As we stated above, the Nintendo Switch is limited to USB 2.0 specifications. In this case, you will get the same maximum network speed of up to 100 Mbps for all three LAN network adapters.
