Midrange PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Gaming TVs: H9G vs. TCL R635

The Hisense H9G and TCL 6-Series R635 are two popular midrange television sets that were released in 2020. So, how does these TVs compare to each other when it comes to playing games on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and other home consoles? Quick Summary

When compared to the TCL 6-Series R635, the H9G has higher brightness levels in HDR. The new Hisense Quantum also has better input lag in 60Hz at 1080p, 1440p, 4K in addition to 4K with HDR. With that said, there are some reported issues with the H9G when it comes to displaying games at 120 Hz.

For next-generation systems, neither of these television sets support HDMI 2.1, which means that you can only play supported games at 120 frames per second in 1080p and 1440p. The 2020 TCL 6-Series does support variable refresh rate, which will be used by compatible games on the PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X to smooth out the framerate and eliminate screen tearing.

If you want good picture quality, then we recommend picking up the Hisense H9G as it easily has brighter HDR brightness. If you prefer gaming at 120 frames per second and/or want to take advantage of the variable refresh rate feature, then you should get the TCL 6-Series R635 instead.

Screen Sizes

The H9G is available in two screen sizes as you can pick between 55-inch or 65-inch. With the TCL 6-Series R635, you can have the choice of 55-inch, 65-inch or 75-inch. You can take a look at the model number for the different screen sizes of the two TVs below:

According to tests done by RTINGS, the TCL 6 R635 has a higher HDR Real Scene Peak Brightness when compared to the Hisense H9G. With that said, the H9G performs better, sometimes way better, at HDR Peak 2% Window, HDR Peak 10% Window, HDR Peak 25% Window, HDR Peak 50% Window, HDR Peak 100% Window, HDR Sustained 2% Window, HDR Sustained 10% Window, HDR Sustained 25% Window and HDR Sustained 50% Window. The two television sets have the same brightness levels at HDR Sustained 100% Window.

To get great picture quality while using HDR, we recommend television sets that can achieve at least 500 nits. Both the Hisense H9 Quantum Android 4K ULED Smart TV and TCL 6-Series 4K UHD Dolby Vision HDR QLED Roku Smart TV are able comfortably above that threshold in all scenes that were tested.

Native Refresh Rate

Both television sets in this comparison have a native refresh rate of 120 Hz, which means that you will be able to play videogames at up to 120 frames per second in 1080p and 1440p on the PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. Due to the lack of HDMI 2.1 ports, you won’t be able to play games at 120 frames per second in 4K.

There have been reports that some gamers are having issues with getting 120 Hz to work properly with the H9G. So, if you are interested in playing at 120 fps, then the TCL 6-Series R635 is the currently the better choice.

Variable Refresh Rate

The Hisense H9G does not support variable refresh rate, also known as VRR, while the TCL R635 does. Variable refresh rate is used to eliminate choppy frame rates and screen tearing.

FreeSync

The 2020 Hisense and TCL TVs do not support FreeSync, a feature found in the latest AMD graphics cards that work similarly to VRR.

GSYNC

Both televisions also do not support GSYNC, a feature from the latest NVIDIA graphics cards that work similarly to the aforementioned VRR and FreeSync.

The Hisense H9G has a slight advantage over the 2020 TCL 6 TV when it comes to latency although the differences are negligible. According to tests done by RTINGS, the H9G has lower input lag in game mode at 1080p/60Hz, 1440p/60Hz, 4K/60Hz, 4K/60Hz/HDR and 4K/60Hz/4:4:4.

A good gaming television set should have input lag that is 30 ms. Both the Hisense H9 Quantum Android 4K ULED Smart TV and TCL 6-Series R6354K UHD Dolby Vision HDR QLED Roku Smart TV are easily well under that upper limit.
