Mark Cerny, the Lead System Architect behind the PlayStation 5, has previously recommended the WD_BLACK SN850 for use with the console.

What are the requirements for a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD?

If you would rather look for another M.2 solid state drive aside from the WD_BLACK SN850, then the SSD must meet the following requirements in order to be supported by the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition consoles:

  • Interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4
  • Socket Type: Socket 3 (Key M)
  • Sequential Read Speed: At least 5,500 MB per second
  • Storage Capacity: 250 GB to 4 TB
  • Form Factor: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110
  • Length Requirement: 30 mm, 40 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm or 110 mm
  • Width Requirement: No more than 25 mm
  • Thickness Requirement: No more than 11.25 mm total (no more 8.0 mm above the board and no more than 2.45 mm below the board)
