Is the QN85A a good gaming TV for PS5, Xbox Series X and other consoles?

The QN85A is one of two Neo QLED television sets released by Samsung in 2021. So, is this TV any good when it comes to playing games on consoles, which includes the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X?

Does the QN85A have HDMI 2.1 ports?

The QN85A comes with four HDMI ports, one of which is HDMI 2.1 while the other three are HDMI 2.0.

HDR Features

The Samsung QN85A Series Neo QLED 4K UHD TV supports HDR10, HDR10+ as well as wide color gamut.

HDR10 is currently being used by the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X and Xbox One S.

The QN85A does not support Dolby Vision, which is being added to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in the future.

QN85A’s HDR Brightness in Game Mode

The Samsung QN85A has excellent HDR brightness. According to tests done by RTINGS.com, the Neo QLED TV can reach up to 1265 nits.

For HDR to really stand out, we recommend at least 600 nits. The QN85A can reach that threshold easily in all the scenarios that were tested with the exception of falling slightly below at HDR Peak 2% Window and HDR Sustained 2% Window.

Adaptive Sync Support

Adaptive Sync is a feature designed to get rid of stutters and screen tearing from playing games that have inconsistent frame rates.

On the PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, adaptive sync in known as Variable Refresh Rate.

On PCs with a compatible NVIDIA graphics card, this feature is known as GSYNC.

On computers with a compatible AMD graphics cards, this is known as FreeSync.

The QN85A supports FreeSync and Variable Refresh Rate but not GSYNC.

QN85A’s Input Lag

When it comes to input lag, the Samsung QN85A has excellent input lag reduction when game mode is used.

We recommend 30 ms or less of lag if you want a responsive experience when playing a game. According to tests done by RTINGS, the QN85A easily falls way below that upper limit at 1080p/60Hz, 1080p/120Hz, 1440p/60Hz, 1440p/120Hz, 4K/60Hz, 4K/60Hz/HDR and 4K/120Hz.

Is the QN85A good for PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

The QN85A is a great choice if you are looking for a TV that takes full advantage of the visual features for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

This Neo QLED comes with one HDMI 2.1 port in addition to supporting HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate. It also features excellent HDR brightness levels and extremely low input lag.

The only real downside is the lack of support for Dolby Vision. If you want to use this TV for PC gaming, then you won’t be able to use the GYSNC feature for NVIDIA GPUs.

Is the QN85A good for Switch, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X?

The QN85A is an excellent television set for older HDMI consoles like the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and Switch due to the aforementioned extremely low input lag when game mode is enabled.

Thanks to the excellent HDR brightness levels, HDR-compatible games on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One X will also look great on this television set.
