Is the Gigabyte M28U a suitable monitor for PS5, Xbox Series X and other consoles?

Does the M28U have any HDMI 2.1 ports?

The Gigabyte M28U Gaming Monitor comes with two HDMI 2.1 ports. For the uninformed, the PS5 and Xbox Series X systems support HDMI 2.1 right out of the box.

While the Xbox Series S has a HDMI 2.1 port, it only comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable. Therefore, you will need to get your own HDMI 2.1 cable in order to take full advantage of the M28U with the less power Xbox Series console.

Supported Console Gaming Resolutions and Frame Rates

In terms of the supported resolutions and frame rates, the following combination is supported by the PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition system:

  • 120 Hz at 4K

For the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, the following combinations are supported:

  • 120 Hz at 1440p
  • 60 Hz at 4K
  • 120 Hz at 4K

When it comes to older game consoles that support the HDMI input, these older videogames should be able to run at 60 Hz in 1080p.

HDR Features

As for HDR features, the Gigabyte M28U is compatible with the HDR10 format, which is used by the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

This gaming monitor isn’t compatible with Dolby Vision, which is supported by a limited number of games on the Xbox Series consoles.

HDR Brightness in Game Mode

The Gigabyte M28U has received a DisplayHDR 400 certification. According to tests done by RTINGS.com, it can reach 484 nits in HDR brightness level, which is passable but not great when it comes to playing a videogame.

Adaptive Sync Support

When it comes to adaptive sync, which is designed to help remove any stuttering and screen tearing, the M28U is compatible with FreeSync, GSYNC and Variable Refresh Rate.

VRR is used for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X consoles.

Input Lag

As you may expect for a gaming monitor, the Gigabyte M28U has low latency.

According to test done by RTINGS, the input lag is 13.1 ms at 60 Hz in 4K and an even lower 4.9 ms at 60 Hz in 1080p.

Is the Gigabyte M28U a good monitor for PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

The Gigabyte M28U is a pretty good medium range monitor for the new PlayStation and Xbox consoles due to the support of 4K, HDMI 2.1, 120 frames per second, HDR10 and Variable Refresh Rate. Not to mention that the input lag is also exceptionally low as you should be able to a very responsive gameplay experience.

The only potential drawback is that the HDR brightness level is passable but not all that great.

Is the Gigabyte M28U a good monitor for Switch, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X?

Older consoles like the Nintendo Wii U, Switch, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One should play well with this gaming monitor due to the low latency.

As we stated above, the M28U does not have the brightest screen for HDR, which means that HDR-enabled games may not look the best on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and/or Xbox One X.
