Is the A90J a good gaming TV for PS5, Xbox Series X and other consoles?

The A90J is a new BRAVIA XR OLED television set released in 2021. So, is this 4K Sony TV any good for playing games on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S as well as other gaming consoles?

You can find out in this buyer’s guide at Seeking Tech for the A90J.

Quick Summary

When it comes to gaming, the Sony A90J BRAVIA XR OLED features an infinite contrast ratio to go along with good HDR brightness levels that will result in stellar image quality when playing games on any console. Not to mention that it also has low input lag when its game mode is enabled. In terms of features, this television supports HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10 and wide color gamut.

On the other hand, the A90J does not support playing games at 120 frames per second in 1440p. It is also currently missing Variable Refresh Rate although Sony is planning to add that feature in a future firmware update for the television set.

A90J Screen Sizes

You can check out the available screen sizes of the A90J below:

  • 55″: XR-55A90J
  • 65″: XR-65A90J
  • 83″: XR-83A90J

Does the A90J have any HDMI 2.1 ports?

The Sony A90J BRAVIA XR OLED has four available HDMI ports, the first two are HDMI 2.0 while the last two are HDMI 2.1.

The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S use HDMI 2.1 for games that support 120 frames per second at up to 4K in resolution.

The new consoles also support HDMI 2.0 as you will be able to play games that support 120 frames per second at up to 1080p in resolution or 60 frames per second at up to 4K in resolution.

Unfortunately, the A90J does not support 120 frames per second at 1440p. So, you will be limited to 60 fps if you want to use 1440p on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

Legacy Consoles Support

When it comes to support for legacy consoles, the A90J come with a composite input although you will need an AV Component Adapter Cable for systems such as the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii and Xbox One.

The TV also includes a cable/antenna tuner than you can use on retro consoles like the NES and Super NES.

Contrast Ratio

Since the A90J is an OLED, it features an infinite contrast ratio, which means that you will get an excellent looking display.

HDR Features

When it comes to HDR features, the new 2021 Sony TV supports HDR10, wide color gamut and Dolby Vision. This television is not compatible with HDR10+.

For HDR gaming, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X all use HDR10 along with wide color gamut.

Microsoft will also be adding support for Dolby Vision for the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X consoles in the future.

A90J’s HDR Brightness in Game Mode

The A90J has good HDR brightness levels. According to RTINGS.com, this OLED has a real scene highlight of 609 nits.

For HDR to look great, we recommend television sets that can display at least 500 nits. The A90J is able to pass that minimum threshold in real scene highlight as well as HDR Peak 2% Window, HDR Peak 10% Window, HDR Peak 25% Window, HDR Sustained 2% Window and HDR Sustained 10% Window.

However, the same TV struggles to keep the brightness level high in brighter scenes such as HDR Peak 50% Window, HDR Peak 100% Window, HDR Sustained 25% Window, HDR Sustained 50% Window and HDR Sustained 100% Window.

You can check out the HDR brightness test results below (via RTINGS):

  • Real Scene Highlight: 609 nits
  • HDR Peak 2% Window: 803 nits
  • HDR Peak 10% Window: 770 nits
  • HDR Peak 25% Window: 512 nits
  • HDR Peak 50% Window: 294 nits
  • HDR Peak 100% Window: 194 nits
  • HDR Sustained 2% Window: 763 nits
  • HDR Sustained 10% Window: 723 nits
  • HDR Sustained 25% Window: 499 nits
  • HDR Sustained 50% Window: 293 nits
  • HDR Sustained 100% Window: 192 nits
  • HDR ABL: 0.086

Adaptive Sync Support

Unfortunately, the A90J currently does not support any adaptive sync features.

FreeSync, GSYNC and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) are used to remove any stutters and screen tears from games that have inconsistent frame rates.

Variable Refresh Rate is currently only supported by the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series S.

With that said, Sony has stated that VRR will be added to the PlayStation 5, as well as the A90J TV, in the future.

A90J’s Input Lag

The A90J has pretty good input lag reduction when you used its game mode.

We recommend latency to be less than 30 ms if you don’t want your gameplay experience to feel laggy. According to RTIGNS, the A90J is easily below that upper limit at 1080p, 1440p and 4K.

You can find the input lag test results below (via RTINGS):

  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 17.5 ms
  • 1080p resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 12.1 ms
  • 1440p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Enabled): 16.6 ms

  • 1080p resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 168.6 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate (Game Mode Disabled): 151.9 ms
  • 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate With Interpolation: 143.7 ms

Is the A90J good for PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

For the new game consoles, the A90J is a little bit of a mixed bag currently when it comes to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

On the positive side, the 2021 OLED offers an infinite contrast ratio, two HDMI 2.1 ports, support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision, good HDR brightness levels in addition to low input lag.

On the other hand, the A90J currently does not support Variable Refresh Rate (although it should be added in the future). It also does not support 120 fps at 1440p.

Is the A90J good for Switch, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X?

Thanks to the infinite contrast ratio and low input lag, the A90J is an excellent television for older HDMI consoles like the PS3, PS4, Wii U, Switch, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Furthermore, its HDR brightness levels should also be good enough for HDR games on the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.
