Better Gaming TV: H8G or H9G?

Hisense released two similar television sets in 2020 with the H8G and H9G. So how does these two compare if you are looking for a gaming TV to play games on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X as well as other gaming systems? You can find out in this comparison guide.

Quick Summary

When compared to the Hisense H8G, the Hisense H9G has much higher HDR brightness levels. On the other hand, the H8G has lower input lag (although the differences are negligible as you most likely won’t notice the disparities in latency).

Both televisions do not support HDMI 2.1, FreeSync or GSYNC. The TVs are compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and wide color gamut in addition to coming with a composite input and tuner.

Overall, we recommend the H9G over the H8G if you are looking for a gaming television set due to the superior HDR brightness levels in addition to having comparable input lag.

HDMI Ports

Both televisions in this versus guide come with four HDMI 2.0 ports, which provides enough bandwidth to play games at up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz refresh rate and HDR.

With that said, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be using HDMI 2.1, which has even more bandwidth, for new features like 120 Hz as well as variable refresh rate (this will help smooth help games with inconsistent frame rates). So you will be missing out on these frame rate enhancements with the H8G and H9G.

In order for HDR to be effective, your TV needs at least 500 nits when it comes to brightness. According to tests done RTINGS, the H9G is able to achieve this standard easily in every scene. The H8G is also to achieve this standard in some scenes.

With that said, the H9G is a much better HDR set than the H8G. The Hisense H9 Quantum Series has 61.5% more nits at HDR Real Scene Peak Brightness, 146.4% more nits at HDR Peak 2% Window, 124.4% more nits at HDR Peak 10% Window, 197.3% more nits at HDR Peak 25% Window, 98.3% more nits at HDR Peak 50% Window and 40.5% more nits at HDR Peak 100% Window

The H9G also has 145.8% more nits at HDR Sustained 2% Window, 122.8 % more nits at HDR Sustained 10% Window, 193.9% more nits at HDR Sustained 25% Window,  97.9% more nits at HDR Sustained 50% Window and 40.7% more nits at HDR Sustained 100% Window.

H8G vs. H9G Input Lag

A good gaming TV needs to have input lag that is less than 30 ms. Fortunately, both the Hisense H8 Quantum Series and Hisense H9 Quantum Series are able to achieve this standard quiet easily when game mode is enabled.

According to tests done by RTINS, the H8G does come out on top as it has 22.8% less latency at 1080p/60 Hz, 23.2% less latency at 1440p/60 Hz, 23.8% less latency at 4K/60 Hz, 22.5% less latency at 4K/60 Hz/HDR and 23.8% less latency at 4K/60 Hz/4:4:4.

With that said, the differences are so small that you will have a hard time noticing when playing games even if you are doing a side by side comparison.

Composite Input

Both TVs come with composite inputs, which means that you can directly plug in old consoles that use the red, white and yellow inputs. These systems include the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube and original Xbox.

Tuner

The H8G and H9G also include a tuner. This input allows you to directly connect your retro systems like the NES, Super NES and Sega Genesis.
