Better console gaming monitor: LG 27GN950-B or Samsung Odyssey G7?

The LG 27GN950-B and Samsung Odyssey G7 are two of the best gaming monitors currently on the market. So, how do these screens stack up against each other in terms of playing consoles games on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S as well as other systems?

At 4K, the flatscreen LG 27GN950-B has a higher maximum resolution than the Samsung Odyssey G7. The LG monitor can also achieve better HDR brightness levels when compared to the competition.

On the other hand, the curved Odyssey G7 monitor features a higher refresh rate (although both monitors are limited to a maximum 120 Hz on consoles). The G7 also has a much better contrast ratio.

Both of the computer monitors offer adaptive sync support, including Variable Refresh Rate, in addition to having very low input lag.

The LG 27GN950-B is a standard flat-screen monitor.

The Samsung Odyssey G7 is a curved screen monitor with a 1000R curvature.

For panels, the 27GN950-B uses IPS while the Odyssey G7 uses VA.

Screen Sizes

The LG 27GN950-B only comes in one screen size as you are limited to the 27” version.

With the Samsung Odyssey G7, you have two choices as you can pick between 27” or 32”.

The LG 27GN950-B does come with two HDMI 2.0 ports.

In comparison, the Odyssey G7 includes one HDMI 2.0 ports.

The LG 27GN950-B has a maximum resolution of 4K, which is 3840 x 2160 in pixels.

For the new PlayStation 5, you will be able to play games at 120 fps in 1080p with HDR on both gaming monitors.

With the 27GN950-B, you can also play games at 60 fps in native 4K with HDR.

With the Samsung Odyssey G7, you can play at 1440p with HDR by downscaling from 4K.

Supported Resolutions and FPS for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

For the new Xbox Series X and S consoles, you can play games at up to 120 fps in 1080p as well as 1440p for the two monitors. However, these systems currently do not support HDR at native resolutions lower than 4K.

The 27GN950-B also supports up to 60 frames per second in 4K with HDR.

For the Odyssey G7, you can downscale the 4K resolution to 1440p, which will also let you play in HDR at 1440p.

Adaptive Sync Support

Both monitors support FreeSync, G-SYNC and Variable Refresh Rate.

These three adaptive sync features will help remove stutters and screen tearing associated with games that have inconsistent frame rates.

Variable Refresh Rate is currently only supported by Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The same feature is expected to be added to the PS5 in a future system update for the Sony console.

Input Lag

The 27GN950-B and Odyssey G7 have excellent input lag reduction as both have latency that is far below our recommend upper limit of 30 ms for a responsive gaming experience.

According to tests done by RTINGS, the 27GN950-B has the advantage with Native Resolution at 60Hz and Variable Refresh Rate at 60Hz scenarios. On the other hand, the Odyssey G7 has the upper hand at Native Resolution, Variable Refresh Rate and 10-Bit HDR scenarios.

With that said, the differences are so small between the two monitors that you most likely won’t notice.

HDR Features

Both computer monitors support HDR10, which is used by the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

The two screens aren’t compatible with Dolby Vision (which will be added into the Xbox Series X and S in a future firmware update for the Microsoft consoles) or HDR10+.

Color Space

The Odyssey G7 has better coverage at DCI P3 xy while the 27GN950-B has better coverage at Rec. 2020 xy.

HDR Brightness Levels

When it comes to HDR brightness levels, the 27GN950-B is quite a bit better than the Odyssey G7.

According to RTINGS, the LG monitor can get brighter than Odyssey G7 in all scenes that were tested with the exception of HDR Sustained 25% Window.

For HDR to really standout, we recommend using screens that are capable of at least 500 nits when it comes to displaying HDR brightness. The 27GN950-B is able to hit that threshold more often than the Odyssey G7.
