What is the best 250 GB M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5

When it comes to the 250 GB capacity, you don’t have many M.2 solid state drives that are compatible with the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

In fact, we can only find one during our research with the 250 GB Samsung 980 PRO. You can find the PS5-related specs for this SSD below:

  • Form Factor: M.2 (2280)
  • Dimensions: 80.15 mm x 22.15 mm x 2.38 mm
  • Interface: PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c
  • Sequential Read Speed: Up to 6,400 MB per second
  • Endurance: 150 TBW
  • Reliability: 1.5 Million hours MTBF
  • Warranty: 150 TBW or 5 Years (whichever is sooner)

The 250 GB Samsung 980 PRO meets the PlayStation 5 requirements by having a M.2 (2280) form factor, PCIe Gen 4.0 interface in addition to a sequential read speed of more than 5,500 MB per second.

Endurance measures how much data can you write on a solid state drive. In this case, you can write approximately 150 TB on the 250 GB 980 PRO.

On the PlayStation 5, data will be written on the 980 PRO every time you move or install a game on the M.2 expansion drive.

Reliability measures how long the 980 PRO is expected to remain functional before potentially breaking and needing to be repaired.

Samsung’s warranty coverage is for 5 years that may end sooner if you managed to reach the 150 TB endurance limit sooner.

Heatsink Requirement

Sony also requires that a M.2 solid state drive has a heatsink attached. The aforementioned 250 GB Samsung 980 PRO PCIe NVMe Gen4 Internal Gaming M.2 SSD does not come with a heatsink. Therefore, you need to get your own.

The entire solid state drive structure, with the inclusion of a heatsink, should fit into the M.2 expansion bay of the PlayStation 5 system.

The maximum supported length is 110 mm while the maximum supported width is 25 mm.

For height, you will need up to 8.0 mm of space above the board as well as up to 2.45 mm of space below the board. In total, the maximum supported height is 11.25 mm.

If you are looking for a PS5-compatible heatsink, then we recommend getting the be quiet! BZ002 MC1 M.2 SSD Heatsink, which you can find on Amazon with this link.
