AMD Ryzen 7 3700X vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3800X vs. AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT

The Ryzen 7 3800XT is a new product for AMD’s third-generation “Performance” line of central processing unit. So how does the 3800XT stack up against the older 3700X and 3800X models? You can find out in this comparison guide between the three CPUs.

Quick Summary

The new AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT has the same base clock speed as the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, which is faster than the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. In terms of maximum boost speed, the 3800XT is faster than both the 3700X and 3800X. All three CPUs have identical cores, threads, PCI, cache and memory.

The only other difference is that the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and AMD Ryzen 7 3800X come with a cooling solution while the AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT doesn’t. As a result, you have to buy a liquid cooler separately if you want to get the best performing CPU out of this group. If you are interested in doing so, we recommend the Corsair H115i RGB Platinum AIO Liquid CPU Cooler.

So, while the 3800XT is the best out of these CPUs, it may not offer the best value as you have to get a cooler if you don’t have a compatible cooling solution already.

If you are interested, you can purchase any of the aforementioned CPUs with the following links from Amazon:

Unlocked Overclocking

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, AMD Ryzen 7 3800X and AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT are all unlocked, so you will be able to overclock the CPUs without any restrictions.

Cache

The Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryzen 7 3800XT have the same amount of cache. You can take a look at the breakdown below.

  • Total L1 Cache: 512 KB
  • Total L2 Cache: 4 MB
  • Total L3 Cache: 32 MB

Architecture

All three CPUs in this comparison use Zen2 as the architecture.

CMOS

AMD uses TSMC 7nm FinFET for the 3700X, 3800X and 3800XT when it comes to the complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (or CMOS for short).

PCI Express Version

The third-generation Ryzen 7 CPUs in this versus guide use PCIe 4.0 x16.

Default TDP / TDP

The new AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT has the same default TDP / TDP as the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, which is more than the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. You can find the specs below.

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: 65 W
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X: 105 W
  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT: 105 W

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, AMD Ryzen 7 3800X and AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT use DDR4 as the system memory.

Memory Specification

All three CPUs in this versus guide as a memory specification of 3200 MHz.

System Memory Channels

The Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryzen 7 3800XT come with two system memory channels.

Thermal Solution

Both the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 7 3800X include a Wraith Prism (with RGB LED) for cooling the CPU.

Unfortunately, AMD decide to not include any thermal solution with the new Ryzen 7 3800XT. The company recommends that you use a liquid-based cooling solution with a 280 mm (or larger) radiator.

If you are looking for one, we recommend taking a look at the Corsair H115i RGB Platinum AIO Liquid CPU Cooler, which you can find on Amazon with this link.
